Defending Our Right to Protest NATO-G8 in Rahm's Chicago
Where: Kent Law School, located at 565 W Adams St Chicago, IL Room 210
When: Sunday, January 8, 2012 @ 2:30pm
Please come to the regular meeting of the Coalition Against NATO-G8. We will be discussing our ongoing organizing against the NATO and G8 summit in Chicago this May, but we will also be discussing Mayor Rahm Emanuel's efforts, exposed this week, to severely limit the right to assemble and protest in Chicago. (
http://www.suntimes.com/9793714-417/rahm-emanuel-on-duration-of-nato-g8-rules-i-made-a-mistake-real-simple-ok.html). There are many aspects to these new draconian attacks on protest including dramatically raising fees on people participating in passive resistance, onerous requirements for protest organizers like requiring the number of protesters beforehand. Emanuel wants to put the chill on protest in the lead up to the NATO-G8 summit, but he also wants to send a message to the Occupy movement, the Chicago Teacher's Union, and any one else in Chicago who wants the right to protest budget cuts, evictions, foreclosures, or police brutality. The City Council will be meeting on January 18 to decide on Emanuel's new anti-protest ordinance.
This Sunday CANG8 will be discussing how to organize a response in opposition to these attacks on civil liberties and the right to assemble and protest in Chicago. We welcome your input for the January 18 protest as well as the larger anti-NATO and G8 protests. We will post the agenda for the meeting within the next few days.
What is NATO?
North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO is an alliance of 28
countries from North America and Europe, founded in 1949 with 12
original countries, dedicated to fulfilling the goals of the North
Atlantic Treaty signed on April 4, 1949. This treaty established
collective defense between its members, meaning “an attack against one
or several members is an attack against all” (
http://www.nato.int/)
and member states will practice mutual defense to any attack by an
outside party. Its rival in the Cold War was the Warsaw Pact dominated
by the USSR. Even after the fall of the USSR and eastern bloc
communism, NATO continues to exist and be active. It provides cover
for US involvement in countries like Afghanistan and Libya.
What is the G8?
Group of 8 or G8 is a group of the 8 richest countries, the United
States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Russia, Germany, Japan, and
Italy that meet once a year at a Summit. Created in 1975, it was
originally made up of 6 countries; Canada joined in 1976 and Russia in
1998. They meet to set a shared agenda for economic and security
matters related to their interests (
