DIAMONDBACKS REFUSED TO MEET WITH BOYCOTT ORGANIZERS!!!!
We launched the national boycott against the Arizona Diamondbacks’
because their owners are amongst the top contributors to the
Republican machine in Arizona that unanimously voted to impose the
draconian SB1070, which legislatively encourages open racial profiling
of “brown people” in a state that is already wrought with this
practice since the early 2000s when Sheriff Dever and his wife allowed
and oftentimes encouraged Arizonan ranchers to “hunt down” border
crossers in Cochise County. Today, the founding boycott organizers
from across the country are in Arizona to denounce the contributions
of the Kendrick family to those responsible for the further oppression
of our people. Come and meet them!
In a press conference on April 20th, 2010, Representative Raul
Grijalva called for a national boycott against the state: “Do not
vacation and or retire there.” Before that call, we had already
called on the Latino and immigrant communities to support a targeted
boycott on the Diamondbacks corporation for having funded the
Republicans that passed this law to further repress our community in
Arizona; our power is economic, namely Labor and Consumption. Since
the congressional vote to pass SB1070, 9 students have been arrested.
Organizers from across the country have mobilized in solidarity of the
immigrant community in Arizona. It is clear our community understands
the gravity of this bill and the consequences it has for other
communities around the country. We will clarify our demands, and
expand the boycott to include “two other demands” related to the
industry.
The boycott against the Diamondbacks has become a major success across
the country, namely in Chicago where hundreds of immigrant rights
activists mobilized and prevented many potential fans from buying
tickets, and even emboldened one fan to publicly rip his ticket, and
prompted a small airplane pilot to fly over Wrigley Field during the
game with a banner that read “Shame on you Arizona.” In Los Angeles,
we have called on the community to boycott the games versus the
Dodgers at the end of the month; and we expect tens of thousands of
immigrant rights activists to mobilize the largest boycott against any
major league baseball team in league history. We expect the same
turnout in San Francisco. Our demands are simple, we publicly call on
everyone to not buy tickets to any Diamondback games and or
merchandise depicting the Diamondbacks until SB1070 is repealed!
