Failure Is Not an Option
Rally in support of the DREAM Act as a sand-alone bill at the office of Congressman Luis Gutierrez
What: A rally and "Coming Out" action in front of the office of Congressman Luis Gutierrez to show the community support for passing the DREAM Act as a stand-alone bill this year, as a first step to further immigration reform that will benefit our entire community. Students will be delivering a letter to the Congressman urging him to champion the DREAM Act, and for his help to urge other members of the Hispanic Congressional Caucus to set a positive standard for reform based on education, hard work, and fairness. Youth and parents will be rallying outside the office giving testimonies in support of passing the DREAM Act by the end of the summer.
When: Today, Thursday June 3rd, 2010, 12:30- 3:30 pm
Where: The office of Congressman Luis Gutierrez in Chicago (2201 W. North Avenue)
Who: Members of the Immigrant Youth Justice League and community allies.
Why: Given the legislative calendar there is a small window of opportunity this summer to pass legislation that will benefit immigrant families. We believe that our families deserve legislation that includes a path to legalization, and the DREAM Act is most tangible option with a real chance at making a difference for our communities this year. For immigrant youth and our families failure is not an option. We ask for the commitment, conviction, and continued leadership of Congressman Gutierrez to free the dreams of thousands of immigrant youth and make the DREAM Act a reality before the end of the year, as a first and important step to immigration reform in the future.
This work is part of a national campaign led by youth all over the country who are working very hard to gain co-sponsors for the DREAM Act in Congress and in the Senate. As a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act, and a long time ally to the undocumented immigrant community, we are asking for our Congressman's leadership. We greatly appreciate the work Congressman Gutierrez has done and want to continue forward in the fight for an immigration reform based on a standard of education and fairness starting with the DREAM Act this year.
