Recap:
On July 20th, hundreds
of students from around the nation gathered in the nation's capitol to urge
congressional leadership to take action and pass the DREAM Act, a bipartisan
bill which would grant immigrant youth a path to citizenship.
On this
day, 22 undocumented youth from around the country participated in sit-ins at
the offices of different Senators in Washington DC including Senator Menendez,
Senate majority leader Reid, Senator Feinstein, Senator McCain, and Senator
Schumer's offices to ask them to pass the DREAM Act as standalone bill as soon
as possible. 21 youth were arrested and risked deportation, ten of them are from
Chicago and members of the Immigrant Youth Justice League.
July 20th was
the second time in US history that undocumented youth have purposefully put
their lives at risk through peaceful acts of civil disobedience to show how
broken the immigration system is and to fight for the rights of our
communities.
At least 65,000 undocumented immigrant youth graduate
from high schools every year, and many of them struggle to attend institutes of
higher education and the military. The DREAM Act is the first step towards a
just immigration reform and will grant youth who traveled to the United States
before the age of 16 a path to citizenship contingent on continuous presence in
the country, good behavior, and the attainment of at least a two-year university
degree or a two-year commitment to the armed
forces.
Sincerely,
Immigrant Youth Justice
League
