FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Chicago, IL - A group of immigrant rights activists and members of the public are now protesting outside the Phoenix Military Academy. Local Police and Security are preventing activists and supporters from entering the public forum where Senator Dick Durbin is holding a hearing in support of a new provision to the National Defense Authorization Act that would offer undocumented youth legal status after completing military service.

Immigrant rights activist and supporters oppose Dick Durbin’s proposal. They state that “by incentivizing enrollment in the same armed forces responsible for the displacement of people from their ancestral homelands in the first place, so called 'pro-immigrant politicians' like Dick Durbin are engineering a new policy of colonial divide and conquer!”

As of now, members of the public have been refused access to the public forum; however they continue to be outside the academy trying to go inside and be able to participate in the hearing.

The protest was organized by Moratorium on Deportations Campaign (MDC) and Committee Against the Militarization of Youth (CAMY).
Phoenix Military Academy is located at: 145 S. Campbell Ave.
