Cubs vs. Arizona (SB 1070)
Cubs fans use Wrigley Field to protest racial profiling
CHICAGO—On Thursday, April 29, 2010, concerned Chicago residents and devoted Cubs fans will double as immigration activists, at Wrigley Field, to support the boycott against the Arizona Diamondbacks and to show solidarity with Latino families of Arizona after the passage of SB1070, which institutionalizes racial profiling.
Immigration activists believe that the integrity of all Latino families in Arizona is at stake. We regret the Chicago Cubs’ decision to reject the request of the Center for a New Community to buy scoreboard message for Sunday’s game. A Facebook page calling people to this action explains, "We're empowering fans attending the games to come prepared with signs to stand in solidarity."
The protest at Wrigley Field is scheduled two days before a march demanding the legalization of all undocumented immigrants, on May 1st.,
Protesters are turning the Cubs’ first game of a four game series against the Arizona Diamonbacks into a demonstration. However, different groups and individuals are reaching out to other Chicago Cubs fans expected to attend any of the four games this weekend against the Arizona Diamondbacks and asking them to take action. The Arizona Diamondbacks are owned by individuals who financed the electoral campaign of Arizona politicians who sponsored and voted for SB 1070.
The Facebook page: Boycott/Picket: Cubs Vs. Arizona SB1070 went viral on Friday, April 23, 2010 after Gov. Jan Brewer signed the bill into law.
The page has reach over 9,000 people and is expected to draw over 400 protesters on Thursday.
What: Press Conference/Picket outside of Wrigley Field Stadium on April 29, 2010 to encourage fans to take a stand against and turn their backs on the Arizona Diamondbacks.
A call to all Chicago Cubs fans to boycott the game altogether.
A message to fans attending any of the four games this weekend to bring signs against SB1070 in solidarity with the people who are being targeted in Arizona.
Where: Wrigley Field Stadium (Corner of Addison and Clark) at 12:00 PM CST on Thursday, April 29.
Recognizing the magnitude of this crisis and impact on thousands of Latino and their local communities and businesses, the protesters call on state leaders to act swiftly to adequately and fairly propose a comprehensive immigration reform that creates a legal path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants living in the United States, particularly those who were brought here as minors; legislation that restores the dignity of the millions of families that currently live in the shadows of unfair stigma. Furthermore, it is equally important that provisions be put in place to reduce the number of people that need to immigrate to the United States without proper documentation in the future.
