If your looking for something fun to do in the next 2 weeks, head out to the
Museum of Science and Industry and check out the "Game On 2.0" exhibit. It's
only going to be there until the end of April and was a lot of fun for the
kids (perfect if your looking for something to do for spring break) and
parents too. Lots of old and new games to play. I was able to beat one of
my teenagers in pong (first game as you walk in) and my youngest and I
discovered Sega's "Bomberman" was a real fun game.

http://www.msichicago.org/gameon/index.html

There is a extra cost ($4 or $5 depending on if your a member) for the exhibit
and you are given a assigned time which is good because it prevents having the
area totally overcrowded with kids... We went on Good Friday and it wasn't
overcrowded (DDR was the only game with lines).

And, you get there via Lake Shore Drive so you avoid the Ryan...

A version of Bomberman (Generation) is available for Game Cube. Only
four players max, though, if I recall correctly.

Some of those UK keyboards I just couldn't get used to, although they
were pretty pounded out, too (like the Infocom HGGTTG station). And the
Amiga 500 was hidden behind plexiglass, so Lemmings was pretty much
unavailable if anyone selected level code entry.

I had the most fun playing a couple games of Discs of Tron, though. I
never got to play that when it was new. (I got #84! Whee!)

They didn't have any Apple II stuff up and running. And the Pachinkos
didn't have any explanatory signage. Maybe they had that at Game On 1.x.

[Yeah, a bit late for anyone to make new plans to go. But hey, I just
got back from Vegas.]

Yep... I had hoped to go back last weekend, but it didn't work out and this
weekend we are camping with the scouts (course, it's probably going to rain
on us all weekend :-( )

Folks still have this weekend though...

The PC version of Bomberman was .99 cents on amazon so we bought one...
I ordered the game cube version too, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Did you figure out what that big black box was with the white lines inside?

No, not much in the way of computer games... just lots of different game
machines from the past. I'm not sure if the controllers were all messed
up or if Mario Kart was really that hard to control...

It's supposed to rain all weekend, so it would be a dry activity for folks
to do still...

There's a mode in Generations that will let players keep playing instead
of being eliminated from play immediately when bombed; they can't win the
level, but they can hover on the edges of the playfield lobbing bombs at
the remaining players. I think it's called Revenge mode. :-)

I don't actively remember seeing something like this; was it in the
stand-up, computer, or console sections? There were a few computers I
had heard of but never seen live before (Spectrum ZX was one, and an MSX
machine or two). And a couple of MAME setups (one on projection). I
didn't check what kind of controllers they had -- if I ever had a MAME
setup I would have to have a spinner (how else to play Tempest? While
the Tempest 2000 on Jaguar setup was sweet, I just could not feel natural
with the standard controller).

We might be too old for that game -- but it was probably the controllers.

I had never played Sokoban before either, and that was kind of neat to
experience. The levels I saw were like a mix of Pengo and Floppy
(unreleased Apple II puzzle game, co-authored by Greg Hale of Rescue
Raiders fame) without anyone chasing you while you were thinking about
the solution sequence.

That's true. Actually I would like to take my nephew to this exhibit,
but he's... way west of Pulaski, by almost 2000 miles. What I haven't
been able to find out is whether the exhibit is travelling east or west,
or whether this is the end of its North American run. If it's going to
be somewhere else, I might have a chance to take him to see it in another
city.

Yep... its regular battle mode... and a lot of fun... it arrived late Friday
and we played it a few times before leaving for the campout Friday. Might
have been better off at home cause it rained on us all day Saturday and
Sunday :-(

They said 5000 scouts went to Galena for the annual Grant Pilgrimage
http://pages.ripco.net/~jwn/tmp/parade.jpg My son is asleep already...

It was right at the end of the first isle so it was old... they had a timex
sinclar computer displayed on the side of it and there was a project unit
in the box but either it wasn't working or we never quite figured out what
it was...

Yep, my wife blammed it on the controllers too :-) I think that was on a
orginal nintendo and we never had one of those... SNES was the first game
machine we bought... we tried for a while searching for PC games to avoid
going to a straight game machine, but aside from Commander Keen and a few
others, there weren't many nintendo style games out back then for a PC so
eventually we got one (plus i think at the time we had a slow machine...
we started with a PC after the S-100 system but never had a 286 machine, we
did finally upgrade when 386's came out)
