Hi,

I've contacted Atlassian about an open source license for JIRA. Also a very good product, IMHO, and very familiar to lots of people.

To save Henry lots of maintenance/admin work I applied for JIRA Studio, basically all of their tools in a hosted environment. It will take about 2 weeks to process the application.

How about a YouTrack license from JetBrains?

I've contacted them and they have not open source license for YouTrack.

That is weird, according to the YouTrack license (
http://www.jetbrains.com/youtrack/buy/license.html ), they do support
oss licenses.
And we should be able to qualify for an oss license.

Cheers

Hi John,

Below is the response from Victoria Dumova, their program manager for OSS, it's pretty clear.

Cheers,

Hi Roelof,

I'm pleased to hear that you use and benefit from our products in your software development work!

Unfortunately, we do not have Open Source license program for YouTrack.

So we're back at the beginning, having the same alternatives as before:
1) Castle Stronghold maintains Donjon again
2) Castle Stronghold open sources Donjon as Castle demo app and we maintain it.
3) We use JIRA instead.

Since Donjon has some serious issues at this point, I'd vote for JIRA
anyway.

Like Henry stated sometime ago the future for Donjon's development is very unclear.
The fact that JIRA is also much more mature, feature rich, in active development *and* is available on a hosted platform (this will save Castle Stronghold time and money) I think the decision between 'alternatives' is pretty easy.

Perhaps we should focus on how to get Donjon's data into JIRA:

Cheers,
Roelof.

Does OSS license include hosting or we'd have to pay for that?

According to the last two messages in this thread it is available for free to open source projects, if the project is deemed valuable for sponsoring. As one of the largest OSS projects in .NET I think we stand a pretty good chance. So let's just wait on their response.

we do have another option - lighthouseapp has a free plan for OSS.
the API is great, and if we do consider github seriously, they both play very nicely together.

I've used lighthouseapp before on commercial projects and it was very useful.

lighthouseapp looks good at first sight.
and while you touched upon GitHub - what about its built-in issue

back then it was *very* simplistic. the lighthouseapp system is much more feature rich, yet super simple to use.
instead of doing the whole SubProjects/Modules/Components thing, where users are always baffled with and end up opening tickets in the wrong places, it uses Tag based taxonomy, which is much easier to grasp and navigate.

Guys,

I've enquired about YouTrack not supporting OSS licenses and this is
what I got back from them:
"Hi John,

The point is that for the moment YouTrack uses commercial Berkley
database.
It's license agreement does not allow us to donate our product for
free.

We are working hard on our own DB, and as soon as we make and switch
to it,
we will definitely start OS license program for YouTrack. This should
happen
within a year.

Since we do want to keep supporting projects like yours, we can
currently
suggest you a big discount for YouTrack. The minimal sum that we can
offer
is $40 for the Professional Edition, and $100 for the Enterprise.
Please let
me know if this is interesting for you, and I will instruct you on how
to
proceed.

Hope for your understanding, and thank you for using our tools.

Best regards,

Victoria Dumova,
OS Support Program Manager
JetBrains, Inc"

I'm willing to donate $100 to Castle for an Enterprise version of
YouTrack.
So should I go ahead and purchase a license, what do u guys think?

Cheers
John

why are we dismissing lighthouse again?
it is free, including hosting, and it has 100% support for github integration (and we are looking at moving to github, which again will lower Stronghold's costs), it has a full API, useful and simple, for integrating anything else we might want (like donjon migration),  and it is a kick ass product.

I was reluctant to install a new tool to serve as issue tracker. Imho,
a hosted solution is much simpler (from the maintenance standpoint). I
can install YouTrack or whatever tool you guys pick on our server
without problemas.

Btw, it's a waste to buy a license for a issue tracker for castle
imho. We can get a Jira license for free, or even a hosted version for
free... I just don't see a reason to someone spend one huindred bucks
on it. But anyway, people are free to spend their money on whatever
they want.

I don't see it as a waste of money, I actually see it as an investment
into the Castle Project future.
I'm willing to spend the money because I've never been disappointed
with any of JetBrains products, and I think the work they've done on
YouTrack is very innovative and that makes it a really nice product to
use on daily basis.

In regards to the license, what name do I use ? "Castle Project" ?

Cheers

No idea when it's going to accessible, they did not communicate this.

AFAIK Confluence is part of JIRA Studio, so we don't need to update it.

I've received confirmation from Michael Knighten, Atlassian's director of hosted services, we can make it accessible at our own url:

'I would recommend that you use that URL for now, while you get everything set up and tested, then once you are happy with it, we'd be happy to support using your own url - please just file a support ticket at support.atlassian.com when you are ready to have the new URL in place.'

It's up to Stronghold to either do this, or provide a way to access Donjon's data.

From the JIRA side, it has a complete API for creating things, so we just need someone to write an app to import the data from a db dump.

I can send a db backup for who will be insterested to do it. Also
there is an app to import data from jira, maybe it can provide some
insight of how to map one model to another.

I could do it, but I won't have time to look at it until the weekend.

It looks like the CSV approach is probably the easiest:

Jono,

With the migration happening soon, should we all create accounts in
the new Jira that match the same account(email address) of Donjon, so
that when you do the migration everything comes across?

Henry is going to provide me with the donjon data access layer to make the migration easier.

I'll be sure to let everyone know when things are ready to take a look at to ensure nothing has been missed.

+1 from me.
I started moving some docs for IoC from current static pages to the
using wiki. It should be quite easy to move them to the new version of
Confluence.
However there's still one issue we should be wary of - links.

IIRC Roelof wrote we can get new wiki under Castleproject.org domain.
Can we make it using.Castleproject.org and ensure all old links point to
the right location after we move, or at least can we set a redirect to
new location or search result based on the URL or something?

Maybe I'm missing something but I thought the new wiki is going to replace our current default web site ( www.castleproject.org ) and the using site, wasn't this the plan?

Theme builder is pretty good for quickly putting those kinds of layouts together in confluence:

I do a bit of confluence/Jira work for clients as well.. so happy to help with building a theme from scratch if the out of box experience isn't quite up to scratch.

Sorry Henry, I thought everyone was on the same page!
Yes, we are going to end up with a website that hosts, www and issues.

And the reason for www2 is to make the redesign + migration easier.

Cheers
John

Got it. I should have missed some messages.

And do you really think that move the main web site to a wiki is a
good ideia? Do you think that we'll be able to fight the entropy of a
wiki and maintain a well organized site in a long term run?

That was the main failure reason on our last attempt to run the main
site using a wiki. This and the lack of offline support.

And btw, imho mongodb site doesn't fit as a model/inspiration for us.
We have to deal with multiple main projects, support projects,
contrib, etc and mongodb not.

Henry Conceição

Henry,

Yes, I do think a well organised and structured wiki is a good idea.

We already started to configure different projects, see
http://castle.jira.com/wiki/display/AR/Home
and contrib can be just another project.

Cheers
John

I'm pretty sure that confluence supports multiple projects.

My concern is how can we ensure that all the projects share a good and
standard navigation model and doesn't became something like we have on
using.castleproject ([1]) today?

Very good question :)
I and Krzysztof have previously spoke about the idea of having a
project leader allocated to maintain the website, this would be a new
position, thoughts?

Cheers

Also, I remember a while ago, there was a thread about a graphic
designer redesigning the website for us, any news on this?
