Decision time, we need to pick a wiki engine to go with.
This new site will replace the using + www sites.

So far candidates are:
- MediaWiki
- ScrewTurn

Please add other candidates and vote.

What are the requirements:
- Easy to update
- Easy to manage
- Approval workflow
- Email notifications (not sure if required)
- ...
Please add more

Cheers
John

I vote that we use MonoRail.

I am not aware of a MonoRail wiki, though.

I think we can compensate the lack of logins with FTP, WebDAV or DirectAccess technologies + NTFS versioning of files through backups to be able to revert. The only security compromise is in contrast to a wiki without html macros allowed which I think is very useful and would like to allow, yielding no real difference imo. This could also improve MR as we develop the site and be according to the principle of dog-fooding your own stuff.

+1 for ScrewTurn Wiki.

For those that haven't had much experience with it:
* Has a nice editor
* Has a desktop edition which can be used by those that need to write documentation offline
* Has all the permission and moderation features
* Has email notifications
* Namespaces will work well for projects
* Great theme support (see http://www.screwturn.eu/FeaturedWikis.ashx for some nice examples)
* And much more

MediaWiki is nice, however in my experience more difficult to install and upgrade than ScrewTurn Wiki and requires the installation of plugins to get some of the features we want because it is more suited to online encyclopedias.

So do we have a decision?
So far ScrewTurn seems to be the favourite, so if you haven't voted and do want to have a say please do it soon!

Is it easy/possible to transfer content from Confluence to Screwturn?

I'm sure is possible, easy not too sure, but I don't think is going to be very dificult, I reckon most of the work is replace wiki syntax with some other syntax.

What kind of instance will you install (SQL or filebased)?

To be honest, I don't know nothing about the stw setup (yet).
Probably, I would go with the sql option unless someone has a good
reason to use the filebased approach.

I think the SQL Server option would scale better for our size wiki. I think the STW web site has some numbers where you should migrate to SQL based.

I also like STW a lot. It also happens to be a .NET solution so if changes are needed they should be fairly straightforward to implement.

No. My castle's top priority is the git/msbuild migration.

Sorry about reviving an old thread, but I was just curious about, why you would name the wiki page stw.castleproject.org? Most users would be more accustomed to perhaps wiki.castleproject.org. Calling it stw is actually quite irrelevant and perhaps misleading, as it refers to the product being used, instead of the context in which it is being used.

I guess it would correspond to be calling using.castleproject.org - confluence.castleproject.org. I believe you get the picture :)

If it's just for migration purposes until everything is up and running, then I understand. But if it's permanent, I don't understand the reason for choosing that name.

Kenneth,

the name is temporary.
When we migrate the old docs and update them with new content (you can help us do this!) the wiki from stw will be moved to the main website.
