I've written a couple of InputFormats using the newer 0.20.2 classes/
interfaces. Will these InputFormats work in the context of a custom
Scheme or will I have to backport them to the 0.19.2 classes/
interfaces?

regards, Andrew

you should probably backport.

the current thinking on hadoop-dev is that all the newer unstable interfaces exposed in hadoop 0.20 will be marked as unstable or experimental and the deprecated annotations will be removed from the stable apis in the next minor release.

also note that the new 0.20 apis are not complete and additions/changes are in 0.21.

further, 0.21 will likely be skipped by yahoo internally even though there is renewed effort to package a 0.21 and get it released.

Cascading has stuck with the stable apis because they are stable and work. we will not likely support the new apis until hadoop goes 1.0 assuming the new apis make it into 1.0, which they may not.

cheers,
chris
