Hey everybody,

I'm running Lion, and today I upgraded to ß61. After the upgrade
completed, though, quicksilver crashed when I invoked it, I think
maybe because of the skin (BezelHUD), but anyways, subsequent attempts
to launch QS just crashed it. So, I totally uninstalled and
reinstalled QS, and it works now (yay!), although, it won't let me add
anything to the catalog, so only things searched through plugins (like
my contacts) are coming up.

Thoughts?

Are you saying that you cannot change the settings in the Catalog preferences?
First of all, I suggest going to these preferences and adding the folders/files you would like to have searchable within the 1st pane.

Let us know if you still have problems :)

That's correct, I can't change anything within the Catalog preference
pane (besides selecting and deselecting plugins' catalogs). I think
you may have missed what I meant, though; when I click on the + button
at the bottom of that window, nothing happens, nothing pops up that
says 'Add Folder' or anything. Thus, I can't search anything besides
what's indexed by the Airport, Address Book, iTunes, Keychain, or Mail
modules (to be explicit). This includes, most noticeably, anything
accessed via Finder (no files or anything show up in results).

I had this same issue, except on Snow Leopard. I had updated from
within QS (i.e. clicked the "check for updates", then accepted the
install of ß61). QS failed to relaunch after upgrade. I figured it
was an old plugin gumming up the works. I moved my Library/
Application Support/Quicksilver dir and even whacked my prefs file.
QS would then launch, but the Catalog was clearly broken: the left
pane only showed "Modules" and "Custom", and I couldn't add any new
catalog items. Some modules weren't visible in the Catalog even
though their plugins were installed (such as Safari).

I deleted the entire QS app and re-downloaded directly from the
website. So far, everything is working again.

I completely uninstalled QS again and reinstalled, and the Finder
module appeared in the plug-in list this time. Before, I had rolled
over the ~/Library/Application Support/Quicksilver folder, which must
have been the issue.

I recently had this problem & never solved it. I was trying to reinstall QS as I had some weird permissions issue with my QS Application Support folder. It had never been as issue before but now with the automatic plugins updating system I needed to sort it out as QS wasn't allowed to change any of my plugins. Plugins wouldn't install automatically & even when I downloaded the plugin it wouldn't install upon double clicking it. I tried everything I could think of & got some advice from the guys on the @lovequicksilver twitter stream but nothing worked so I completely uninstalled QS & tried to start from a clean install. After adding all the plugins I use my catalogue looked like this:

whereas my old Catalogue panel looked like this:

Apart from everything else it's a bit of a bummer not having my Applications indexed as you can imagine. I couldn't add folders from the Catalogue panel by clicking on the + at the footer of the panel as the option to add folders didn't appear so couldn't add the Applications folder this way. Unlike @dsellers my Finder module was present & ticked but when I looked in ~/Library/Application Support/Quicksilver/Plugins there doesn't seem to be Finder plugin. I also can't find the Finder plugin on QSApp.com.

Anyway, in the end I remembered I'd installed QS on my parents Mac a few months ago, before my permissions problems, so I used Logmein to access their Mac & send over a copy of the Application Support folder & preferences file which has sorted out my problems. All I had to add was add a couple of triggers & shelf items.

I'm just mentioning this in case it's a new problem. New users may not realise there's a something amiss (although not having Applications appear in QS I imagine would give it away) & old users wouldn't experience it unless, like me they tried a clean install. Maybe one of the devs can try logging into your guest account & see if the problem's replicated there for you?

Thanks for the story Guy, it's certainly an interesting one.

Did you also transfer the Quicksilver.app file from your parents' Mac, or just the support folders?

To me, it sounds like a problem loading the core support module (that's the module that gives you the catalog entries that you say are missing)
The only reason I can think of for your woes is that the plugin wasn't loading correctly. Was there anything in the Console.app?

Hi Patrick. I didn't transfer the App as well, I kept the new B61 version I'd just downloaded.

Just visited my guest account again, attached are all the console messages created upon setting up a new QS. Again the catalogue was empty after going through all the rotating cube business. Should all the catalogue entries be created during this phase or are they created in response to plugins downloaded or settings set?

Obviously though if this is just an isolated case effecting only me it's no problem as I've found a workaround.

I was thinking the same thing. Do you have a Core Support plug-in in ~/Library/Application Support/Quicksilver/PlugIns? If so, delete it and restart Quicksilver.

There's no "Core Support" plugin either in the plugins panel or on QSApp.com as far as I can see:

That seems to be the problem. The core support plugin is bundles with the Quicksilver application (hence why it's not on QSApp.com, but it should definitely be showing in your Quicksilver preferences.

As Rob said, check the folder above. (You can get to it by hitting ⌘⇧G in finder and typing that in) to see if there's a core support plugin there. There shouldn't be!

However there was a core support plugin in my main accounts QS Plugin folder & when I dropped that into the plugins folder in my Guest accounts Plugins folder & restarted everything loaded properly.

Any idea why it wasn't appearing originally just for me? I presume you guys tried what I was trying to make sure it was only affecting me & not every new user? Is the Core Support plugin meant to appear on QSApp.com or is it just me who can't see it there either?

Well now I'm confused! I've def got a core support plugin in my main accounts plugin folder & in QS's plugins preferences panel & everything works fine here.

But in my new setup in the Guest account without the Core Support plugin in either folder of panel the catalogues empty & Applications aren't indexed etc.

As soon as I add the Core Support plugin from my main account to the guest accounts plugins folder & restart everything works fine.

Are there any problems with my leaving the plugin there?

The Core Support plug-in is part of the application and should only exist in /Applications/Quicksilver.app/Contents/PlugIns. You will likely have problems if there’s a copy in your user’s plug-ins folder.

You might see it on the list of plug-ins in the preferences, but it should be set so you can’t deactivate it.

To clarify, you may or may not have problems if Core Support is in your user’s plug-ins folder somewhere, but you should not have any problems if it’s missing from that location. It sounds like you’re seeing the opposite, which is strange. Can you confirm that it exists in /Applications/Quicksilver.app?

I presume you mean in /Applications/Quicksilver.app/Contents/Plugins? In which case only these are present there:

Ok, so I've just re-downloaded Quicksilver β61 & it seems there is a Core Support plugin present in this App.

So that's another one explained. Well done all. Very curious that it was stripped out of the original App I downloaded. I was one of the first people who downloaded it as I was watching twitter when Phil announced it's release. I've never looked at the Contents of Quicksilver.app before so I'm sure I didn't remove it intentionally or accidentally. There's no check that runs at startup is there that looks to see if there's a Core Support plugin in ~Library/Application Support/Quicksilver/Plugins & if yes removes it from /Applications/Constents/Plugins I guess? Only thing I can think of.

OK, great troubleshooting!

It's brought up a problem I guess with deleting plugins. For the next version, we need to incorporate a check before deleting plugins to make sure they are NOT in Quicksilver.app.

Could you make an issue along the lines of 'Quicksilver should check before deleting plugins within Quicksilver.app (core support)'

Thanks!

Hi -- I read this thread and did an experiment. I had a core plugin in
my library support folder and after quitting quicksilver, deleted it.
When I turned in quicksilver again, it started fine but could not read
any of my custom catalog entries, and also seemed to be lacking many
default entries in the 'catalog' section of the preferences. My custom
entries were there, but unclickable. I quit and restarted QS a couple
of times, but there was no improvement. Finally, I restored the plugin
and it is working fine, again. FYI, the version number on my core
plugin, as seen in the Finder info window, is 0.5.2.

Thanks for the info.

My guess is that Quicksilver incorrectly deleted the core support plugin from within Quicksilver.app as opposed to the one in your library support folder.

If you follow these steps, do things work:

1. Delete the plugin in your library support folder
2. re-download and re-install Quicksilver from http://QSApp.com
