DIGITAL ANNOUNCES FAMILY OF INTERNET AlphaServers

Internet on the Desktop with High Performance Internet-Ready
Server Systems based on the UNIX Operating System

MAYNARD, Mass. -- November 30, 1994 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
today announced a family of packaged Internet AlphaServer systems
that allow users to put the world of Internet information on the
desktop. The offering combines the 64-bit RISC performance of Alpha
with the award-winning DEC OSF/1 operating system, and pre-installed
Internet software. The easy-to-install, easy-to-use servers are
ready to connect to the breadth of Internet resources. For users
who require robust, supported solutions, an optional license allows
use of Netsite network server software from Netscape Communications,
with full support from Digital worldwide.

"All Internet AlphaServers come complete with the most commonly
used Internet applications so that users do not have to be
technology experts to connect with and get full use from the
Internet," said Rose Ann Giordano, vice president of Digital's
Internet Business Group. "Pre-installed Internet software combined
with the power of Alpha allows users to take full advantage of the
electronic highway. And Netsite server software, coupled with
Digital's support, boosts efficiency, ease of use, and reliability
to meet the needs of the most demanding customers."

The three Internet AlphaServer packages are:

o Internet AlphaServer 1000, the top of the line highly
expandable system, offers customers large system features and
performance at a small system price. The Internet is global,
but to actually reach an audience that spans all time zones,
you need to stay on line constantly. This system provides a
level of reliability and availability that is unique for its
price range - with fully redundant power supplies, ECC (error
correction code) cache and memory and hot swap disc. The
Internet AlphaServer 1000 system is ideal for small-and-medium
sized businesses and organizations with high-availability
requirements such as school districts, university departments,
corporations, and Internet Service Providers.

o Internet AlphaServer 400, is the ideal development system. Its
high-performance CPU provides accelerated processing for
Internet publishers and developers of next-generation
multimedia applications and video conferencing tools for the
Internet.

o Internet AlphaServer 200, is the highest value server offering
high performance at a great price. Small to medium sized
workgroups such as schools, libraries, and small businesses
will find it most affordable.

All Internet AlphaServers come factory installed with Digital's
unique ELECTRONIC LOCKER administration software for quick system
set-up, easy management and straightforward user menus. The
ELECTRONIC LOCKER administration software allows non-experts to
manage server systems from an easy to use Mosaic client interface.

All servers also include factory installed MailWorks for OSF/1.
MailWorks allows users to connect to a variety of clients and mail
transport services. Client choices include MS-Windows, DOS,
Macintosh, Motif and TTY, cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail clients for
Windows.

To provide secure Internet connectivity, Digital's security
Firewall service is available as an option. Firewall service allows
you to tap into the power of the Internet without inviting unwanted
guests to tap into your business.

The Internet AlphaServer systems' industry leading, 64-bit DEC
OSF/1 operating system is compliant with more than 60 standards-
based protocols related to the Internet alone. These standards
provide investment protection for developers and end-users alike.
Factory-installed software eliminates the need for consolidating,
compiling, testing, and tuning --steps typically associated with
building and debugging a system from scratch. This saves time and
money in set-up and installation.

The optional Netsite server software offered by Digital has
four advantages over other HTTP-compatible servers:

o Speed -- It delivers multimedia documents up to several times
faster than other servers and handling peak loads without
hesitation.
o Efficiency -- It makes optimum use of CPU capacity.
o Ease of use -- It allows the user to get up and running in
minutes, and provides configuration and maintenance through
intuitive, on-line forms.
o Support -- Digital provides full support worldwide.

All Internet AlphaServer systems are pre-installed with
TCP/IP--the most popular mode of connection employed by Internet
Service providers. Access can be dedicated or dial-up. The most
commonly used Internet applications are also pre-installed: E-Mail,
Telnet, FTP, World Wide Web and Gopher browsing, news reader, WAIS,
and NCSA and CERN World Wide Web server software.

The Internet AlphaServer 1000 comes with a 3 year on-site
hardware warranty. Should there be any problem with the hardware,
Digital will be on site by next day. The Internet AlphaServer 400
and 200 come with a 1 year on site and 2 year drop off/mail return
hardware warranty.

Digital and its partners also offer a full range of network
consulting and services to help customers plan and select the most
effective means of networking -- whether it's one school, one office,
or many sites.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open
client/server solutions from personal computing to integrated
worldwide information systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms,
storage, networking, software and services, together with industry-
focused solutions from business partners, help organizations compete
and win in today's global marketplace.
