What are you trying to do? I build the i2c-tools which came as part of
lmsensors-2.10.8 and the i2cdetect, i2cget etc which came with that
just worked.

You can create a program user-side, using ioctl to transfer the data you need. Just download the tools and you will need the i2c-dev.h from them
