Is there some way to get BBedit to keep all of the various fragments
of its user interface in the same Space? I've seen several times now
where the documents drawer/window/whatever it is ends up in Space #1
with everything else over in Space #4 where I'm working. It's not all
that big of a deal, once you realize it's happening, but it's really
ugly, and very embarrassing if anyone should see your screen.

Greg,

If I am thinking properly, understanding properly (I just woke up ;-)
-
this is not a BBedit question but a MacOSX question. Just go into the
system preferences, go into prefs for spaces, and tell it which space
you want to park BBedit stuff. Then when you launch bbedit it will
launch there and new docs will open there too. If you move docs to
another space to work then fine, but note that when you make a new doc
it will still make it in the space that you told spaces prefs to keep
bbedit in...

If you need help with this or something ask again. If others might be
annoyed by off topic, then email me privately.

The question wasn't how to use Spaces, it was how to get BBedit to use
Spaces properly.

I have BBedit set up to use Space #4. But as I move back and forth
between Space #4 and Space #1, the Documents bar eventually gets
separated from the rest of BBedit and shows up in Space #1 by itself.
The rest of BBedit stays in Space #4. If I click on the Documents bar
in Space #1, the display moves to Space #4 (which is still missing the
Documents bar). Working in Space #4, if I hide and then reveal the
Documents bar, it goes back home to Space #4. It doesn't have to be
Spaces #1, the Documents bar seems to move to the "current" space,
whatever it is (except Space #4 where the rest of BBedit is).

The Documents bar is the thing that shows up on the right in Project
mode. The project browser on the left seems to stay put OK, it's only
the Documents list that moves.

I always assumed they knew about this problem, but it wasn't a high
priority. It's also not new to version 9 as I'm certain it was there
in the previous problem.

FWIW, my Spaces are vertical; I don't remember seeing this on my
Macbook Pro where they are horizontal.

This behavior is due to a bug in the system's support for Spaces, and
unfortunately there's no way to work around it.

We have reported the problem to Apple, and hope it will be corrected in a
future system update.

I've reported this bug myself many times to apple. It is a bug with drawers / spaces. Nothing barebones can do about it.

I'm not convinced this is all apple. Sure, spaces is buggy, but
BBEdit, especially after upgrading to 9.1, is by far the worst
offender. ms office apps might switch spaces on me once a week at
most. BBEdit is doing it at least once an hour, and often more. It's
driving me nuts. I have it assigned to space 4, but it keeps ending up
on 1, 5 or 7. After upgrading, I also tried removing it from the
spaces list, then re-adding it. No effect. I keep seeing the posts
where people claim it's all apple, but all the evidence I see points
the other way. If this is a bug with the way apps with drawers
interact with spaces, why I have I never seen this with textmate? Why
have I never seen this with ANY other app, than the occasional office
mishap?

please, prove me wrong, someone.

Why have I never seen it in BBEdit?

BBEdit behaves for me quite well in space 2.

Wow, that is hard to believe. BBEdit is constantly leaving its drawer
behind on the wrong space. it does it more than any othee
application; more than ALL other applications, in fact. I use
Handbrake, which also has a drawer, and I've never seen Handbrake
leave its drawer hanging out on some random window. I know it's not
just me, as many complain about this.

I see this all the time, and while it's fairly annoying, I've never
considered it big enough to complain about. Actually, I thought it
was just me.

Usually what happens, is I have one project open in one window on
space 3, and open another project on space 2. Then I might open a
file, put it in its own window and drag it from space 3 to 2. At that
point, all BBEdit windows want to live in the same space, ie. the
origional window from space 3 comes along to space 2. Moving it back
to space 3, _all_ BBEdit windows (including the one that was living on
space 2) move to space 3. When in the spaces view, only the one
you're dragging looks like it's moving, but when you click over and
end up in a space, the rest of the windows move along.

I've also seen it happen with MS Office apps, but nothing else (I
often have different Firefox windows open on different Spaces).

I strongly suspect it's actually a Spaces bug, and a very rare
condition triggers it, hence why I only see it in those two apps.

Not only Office, but Adobe CS3 has Spaces problems. In fact on the
rare occasion I've even had Spaces problems with iWork apps. But
Office is the worst, followed by CS3.

Hi all,

Just revisiting this issue again.

Since upgrading to official 9.1.1 (2328) I am now seeing this *very*
often and find it trivial problem to reproduce. It now occurs not only
with the documents drawer as I've seen in the past, but any random
BBEdit window. I force some applications to specific Spaces but BBEdit
is *not* allocated to a specific Space. I see one or more of its
windows end up all over the place whenever I am switching frequently
and often see the project window, editing windows, shell workspaces
and (s)ftp windows end up on different spaces when they were all
started on a specific space.

Other than MS Office apps, nothing else I frequently run does this, so
I'm also not at all convinced that it is purely a bug in Spaces per se.

I use BBEdit to work on multiple projects at the same time, in a one-
project-per-space fashion. The only time I notice BBEdit windows
moving around on me is when I've got the documents drawer open on at
least one BBEdit window and I drag a window from one space to
another. The pane that I'm moving doesn't need to be the one with the
drawer open for this to happen; all that's required is for one BBEdit
pane, anywhere on any desktop, to have the documents drawer open. The
result is that all of the BBEdit panes end up in the Space where I
moved the single pane.

I don't force BBEdit to any particular space, which everyone here
seems to be doing.
