xp home - download problem

g'day,

i have a new computer with xp home sp2 installed.

it has 1 gig ram

200 gig hdd only just under 9 gig of hdd is currently used.

every download i try to install takes many attempts with a new fresh
download each time until eventually if i am lucky xp allows it to
install.

i have xp pro on my old machine and have had win 95 & 98 and never
have i had any problems getting downloads and installing them.

currently i am trying to download and install windows live messenger,
i have deleted and fetched new downloads and tried to install
immidiately app' 10 times now. and xp says it failed possibly due to
'lack of memory, lack of disc space to allow file transfer or a
corrupt cabinet file'. this has been the same reason on each attempt.

i check the download file size against what has been downloaded and
they match, so what the problem is? is beyond me, even tried a free
download manager and that didn't help.

my only conclusion is it has something to do with xp home sp2 somehow.

What exactly happens with the attempts to install that fail ?

Presumably you do a fresh download because it complains about a bad file ?

If so, you've got a problem with your downloads.

Yeah, it isnt common to get that effect.

Most likely the file is corrupt.

Most likely the file is corrupt. Try comparing one that
works with one that doesnt, using a binary compare.

Yeah, it wont if the file is getting corrupted in transit.

I certainly dont get that effect with mine and I dont recall
any reports of others getting that effect with SP2.

Try downloading something thats in zip or rar format and
see if you can verify it. Bet they will mostly be corrupted.

Are you trying to download the updates via the Windows Update site?

If so then go to the Windows Update site and note down the KB numbers
of the updates you want to install, then go to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;KBHOWTO type
the KB number of the update you are after into the "For" box and click
search down load the update that is for your machine, often there are
several versions of the same update for different Windows operating
systems.

If this works then burn the files you download to a CD for future use.

this problem is unique to the new machine only.

where i go fo downloads is where that particular site directs me. so i
don't know what form they are in except they generally are all zipped.

so my question is still then why is it only this version of xp having
the problems?

this is a m$ program i am trying to download and install.

it agve me almost as hard a time on the following downloads which
eventually it installed:

avg
peer guardian
ad-aware
spy bot
spyware blaster

it is not a windows up date it is a new version of ms messenger called
'windows live messenger'

this has uniquely on this new machine with xp home sp2 happened to
other downloads as well.

Best to confirm that plain zip files do get corrupted during
downloading first. Because the problem may be different to that.

Sure, but at this stage its important to decide whether the file is
getting corrupted during the download, or whether its something else.

The best way to check for corrupted downloads is to download a zip
file, dont try to install it, just open it with WinZip etc and verify the archive.
That will tell you if its getting corrupted during the download.

ok more on the topic,

i went to the old machine downloaded the program did and install on
the old machine in quick time no xp sp1 causing problems.

then copied downloaded file onto usb flash stick plugged it into new
machine and from the flash stik installed the program no worries at
all.

so my question still is why does xp home sp2 cause all these problems?

You need to trouble shoot the problem in a systematic way.
Perhaps if you post the complete details of your system hardware and
software it might be easier for people to offer solutions.
As an example of the possible causes of corrupt file downloads there are
people on this forum (linked below), that have had problems with network
cards, firewall software conflicts and a feature of some nVidia based boards
called Active Armor.

Doesnt to me, because hardly anyone
gets download corruption with XP SP2.

Bet it would even with SP1.

g'day rod,

yup gree it may not happen to you as you say, but it is happening to
me. an it tech told me never to get sp2 but all advice on this forum
and others said i needed to get it and nothing would happen.

what is happenint to me is what the tech told me happens to some sets
not all but some and it is hard to figure why.

now it doesn't happen with xp sp1 as i just showed, i did the download
on xp sp1 installed it on that machine, then copied the download to
the flash stick and plugged that into the new xp sp2 machine and
installed from there and it all worked.

but it would not work using xp sp2 even after app' 10 times doing a
new downlaod each time just in case it was corrupted there but the
download would ahve been good it only became corrupted when i tried to
get xp sp2 to install the download.

the common factor is since i have had this new machine with xp sp2 i
have trouble installing downloads even when it is obvious the
doiwnload is not corrupted.

as i already know others have the problem i had hoped that someone
here may know of it and how to fix it?

i must repeat i have never in 15 years of computers with win 95, 98 &
xp sp1, i have never had problems in installing any download i wanted
to get.

thankfully i don't do much downloading and hopefully this is the last
one but the m$ problem should not be there or it should be fixable.

No you didnt with the hardware that you are getting corruption with.

Yes, but unless you have just sp1 on that PC that has the
problem, it doesnt prove that its sp2 thats the problem.

Yes, because you are getting corruption with downloads on that new PC.

You havent established that last, JUST that its the same size.

You never did answer the question about whether
both PCs connect to the net the same way.

Try swapping the connection used.

Its more likely to be the motherboard tho as Fred listed.

g'day steam,

nothing wroing with waht fred said i provided more info' along the
line he said i am yet to go to that site he listed, and it has lots ot
do with m$ xp sp2, i ahve never never had the problems with xp sp1 or
win95/98, if you read my other posts i have had problems from day one
trying to instal many downloads that i needed.

yes maybe lots of people out ther don't have problems maybe it depends
on what programs they want to run, but this si happening so i hope
someone out there may twigg to what the issue is with sp2.

i do appreciate all the imput and i suppose if i can't get my story
across i may have to live with it.

i first wrote the failure said i have either not enough ram, not
enough disc space free for file transfer or maybe it is a corrupt
cabinet file that is what m$ xp told me.

so i reiterate i have a 200gig hdd with only 9 gig in use that leaves
over 190 gig free space. and i have 1 gig ram.

my old machine is running 351 meg ram and a 6 gig hdd and it causes me
no problems with xp sp1

i did answer that question re the pc connections

the new machine use an ethernet connection

the old one uses a usb connection

and if it isn't sp2 corrupting the install then i don't know what it
is?

all update downloads for xp and all spyware and anti-virus software
all load and install no trouble

that jargon as i am no technical person with computers.

From what I have read it may be more of a driver issue that only affects
some users.
I just visited a forum dedicated to the A8N range of motherboards and there
is a recent thread there mentioning new nVidia drivers that may solve the
problem.

"Nvidia has released a new driver package for the NF4 based mobo's. For a
AMD based mobo the file can be found @
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_win2k_6.86.html
One of the things that has to be done is to uninstall your old networking
drivers at a minimum. I would recomend that users uninstall all the NF4
drivers just to be safe. According to Crisao23 the following needs to be
done if a user is brave enough to install the Nvidia Firewall:
Run the drivers installer and follow the install sequence til it asks you if
you want to install the NAM, say NO reboot then when back at desktop unpack
the drivers installer using WinRAR and run the firewall installer inside the
NAM folder. If this is not done you will see a error on some boards, due to
the fact that you were using old network drivers it'll say that NAM isn't

so si there a qik check that says this driver or that driver need
replacing upadting? and that the problem will then be fixed? i don't
feel i have the competancy to uninstall driver and install new ones.

no not quiet correct i ahve trouble trying to put into words that
those who read it can understand waht i am saying because i am not a
technical person around computers.

the only problems i have is with new downloads when i try to download
and install suing the new machine, i cannot reall saying anything
about updates, that is the confusing issue with as i see it the
machine will downlaod any up dates and install them for any updatable
programs no troubles at all.

but the only way i can download and install a new program onto the new
machine is by downloading it on the old machien and using the flash
stick to install it onto the new machine that works???? why i don't
know?

when a new downlaod coplmetes ther is no indication that that zipped
(as i know it) file is corrupt until i try to execute and install.

so from my simplistic novice view point if there are conflicts with
drivers etc., ? it must be (well) known in the industry so why aren't
there some for us novices fixes available?

Not sure if that is a question to me or not.

If its is, I'd first try turning off the nvidia firewall as documented
in the first of Fred's threads and if that doesnt fix the problem,
try the updated driver thats mentioned later.

I just meant that until you try the alternatives listed in those
threads that Fred listed, it isnt possible to way which one is
the problem with the corrupted downloads.

And I said that you need to try turning the nvidia firewall off first,
and if that doesnt fix the problem, try the updated driver next.

Yeah, I just meant that the problem has come with the new
motherboard, not that its the physical motherboard that is faulty.

Not necessarily, some motherboard problems can be quite specific in the
effect of the problem. But at this stage it looks like the motherboard is fine
since many have found that just turning the nvidia firewall off fixes the problem.

Try turning the nvidia firewall off first. If that doesnt fix the problem, I'll give
you detailled instructions on how to update the driver. Its very easy to do.

Because when you download using the new PC, the file gets corrupted.

When you download it with the old PC, the file isnt corrupted.

Yes, but like I said, just because the file length is the same
doesnt mean that all the bytes in that file are correct.

Presumably it cant be that commonly seen yet for some reason.

In other words the corruption is only commonly seen
with a particular hardware config or something.

Presumably Asus will document it properly when its
clear just when the download corruption is seen and
when it isnt with that particular motherboard.

Click on the Nvidia Firewall icon in the systray, where the clock is.

In the top entry, Current Firewall Profile, select the off entry.

Thats in the manual, P 3-20 if I didnt say it clearly enough.

I wouldnt worry about it for now until you get the download problem resolved.

The other one with file copying locally appears to be only seen
with hard drives you dont have and I'll tell you how to check that
you arent seeing the problem with yours once the download
problem has been resolved.

No, you said you had a hardware firewall in your router from memory
and you likely have the XP one still turned on too if you didnt turn it off.

I wouldnt myself, even if you dont have a firewall in your router/adsl modem.

The XP firewall is quite adequate unless you want to be able to
see what stuff on your system is connecting to on the net etc.

What happened with the downloads or are you
asking before you connect to the net and try that ?

Just get one from tucows etc and just verify
the zip file, no need to actually install it.

how do i verify the zip file, i had a look at the files i have in my
download folder and it just calls them application files.

the problems are growing rod, i have been all day trying to get an
update into avg even tried a whole new download uninstalled the older
copy all the same version, that all failed and now it won't install
avast and i have nvidia turned off.

Right click on the zip file and select the Open with WinZip entry in the popup menu.

See if that Open with WinZip appears in the popup menu with
any of them, it will with the ones that are self extracting zip files.

Yeah, it looks rather like you are still getting corrupted downloads.

See what that uninstall in add/remove does.

Correct, it doesnt. You have to install winzip to get those popups.
