DINDIGUL: A Sub-Inspector attached to the Vadamadurai police station in Dindigul district has been placed under suspension over an alleged custodial death.
The police received information on Sunday during a temple festival in Mottanampatti that Senthilkumar(33) of the area was creating nuisance under the influence of liquor. A team led by SI Thirumalai Muthusamy proceeded to the village and took Senthilkumar in custody for questioning at midnight.
He was reportedly beaten up by seven policemen.
His family was later informed that he died at the police station. His wife told DIG Saileshkumar Yadav that no one had lodged any complaint against her husband, but the police took him to the station only to help DMK former union secretary Sureshkumar, also a relative of Senthilkumar, with whom he had a dispute over property.
A case is pending in Vadamadurai police station in this regard.
Following his death, Mottanampatti villagers picketed Vadamadurai police station, staged a road roko on Dindigul-Tiruchi highway and damaged two buses and a jeep of the block development officer. Police who reached the spot resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd.
DIG Saileshkumar Yadav told reporters that there was a civil dispute between Senthilkumar and Sureshkumar.
The latter had obtained anticipatory bail against arrest.
The DIG said on Sunday around 1.30 am, Sureshkumar and some other villagers informed the police that Senthilkumar in an inebriated condition was creating nuisance at the temple. So the police took him to the station around 4 am and registered a case against him.
Senthilkumar was later produced before the Vedasandur judicial magistrate, but died on the way to the prison, the DIG said, adding that a case has been registered.
Meanwhile, SP M S Muthusamy placed SI Thirumalai Muthusamy under suspension for taking Senthilkumar into custody without obtaining the medical certificate on his inebriation.
