I hesitate to announce that we've won because we don't want to sound
like we're bragging.

But then again, we know people are curious to hear what's going on.

So...Pocket Journey was one of the winners: www.pocketjourney.com.

Best of luck to everyone (winner or not) as we could never have made
it this far without the contributions from everyone that's posted to
this community. We've tried to give back through the tutorials at
blog.pocketjourney.com though and plan to post many more over the
coming months.

Cheers! I'm heading off for a much anticipated jumbo-sized margarita.

Well it's a tradeoff, too original can be bad too. I entered a
submission that does a real-time search of > 1 million product images

closest matching shapes...(all based on my thesis)...

But barcodes are where it's at. Wish I'd know that sooner!

1. Originality
2. Effective Use of the Android Platform
3. Polish and Appeal
4. Indispensibility

Not every application meets these conditions. I see, that some do not
meet most of them.

Now, I know, why I lose. I focused to meet all of them. All judgement
process is unclear, closed and I think, very unfair.

Unless we (loosers) get official stats, ranking results, and "4
points" personal score for each application, we can treat this
challenge as mockery.

All winning applications I have seen so far are the kind of
applications that nobody can complete if the original deadline was not
changed (For those of you who forgot, the original deadline was not
April 14 but more than a month earlier). We did not pursue our entry
because we felt we selected an application that cannot win. We
selected an application based on the original deadline because we
assumed the original deadline will be strictly followed. When the
extension was announced, it was too late for us to change our entry to
a more sophisticated application.

I felt, and I still feel, that before the orignal deadline some
entries under development were already disclosed to OHA. If you'll
notice, the winning entries are really great (I can say WOW! to say
the least) and I think OHA thought those apps were so great that it
would be a pity if those apps could not make it just because of a
short deadline. Hence, the extension.

I am happy about our decision not to pursue (we'll surely lose), and I
am excited of me using the winning applications when gphone finally
arrives. In the meantime, I'm having feast in getting ideas from the
winning apps and see what I can use to develope my next iphone/windows
mobile application.

I made video manuals and I didn't write document for usage.
But only 3 of 12 judges played it. That three guys played 5%, 10% and
50% of manual.

+1 BioWallet

A biometric authentication system that currently supports iris
recognition. It can act as a password manager with strong encryption
capabilities all without any password. It can also provide single sign-
on services for other applications in the Android platform.

Just to share my experience, and to answer some comments I have read
on these forums, my application was not very polished, it didn't
offered 10000 features or had a nice web site or video (that doesn't
mean I didn't work on it, in fact, it took me hundreds, probably
thousands, of hours of researching and coding). I think I just won
because it was a really innovative idea with lots of future
possibilities and the judges appreciated that (that's my opinion).

Best regards and good luck for winners and non-winners.

To continue on track on this discussion, the winners come from all

like Android. Open challenge, these words are powerful.

Real winners with merits, no politics (only terrorist were
disqualified), that’s excellent. This challenge shows the real sense
of Google over the world. When I switch from Yahoo to Google as my
search engine several years ago (it was not easy for me), one reason
was the impartiality of result searches and first quality info.

Congratulations again to all winners worldwide, and to Google to make

I have to come to the defense of Eco2Go. Or at least take the
conversation a little deeper to understand everyone's complaints.

Maybe all the younger kids participating in the Challenge have yet to
realize their impact on the globe, but I for one find Eco2Go a
refreshing idea. Whether it is required as a mobile app is another
question so let me address that next.

I'm currently consulting full-time in the past year, I drove roughly
15,000 miles, fly internationally at twice, flew coast-to-coast at
least 7 times a year plus a 5 flights around the West coast. However
I buy organic, recycle, compost, & use compact fluorcent lights. If
EcoToGo could also track how much I lightage I use, magazines I
subscribe to, & such then it would be useful to know what my total
contribution to the carbon footprint would be for the last year.

That said, I could probably get the same info by making a rough
estimate via some website calculator rather than starting up Eco2Go
everytime I start my car...

All that aside, Eco2Go is one of only a few apps I've seen that
attempt to address a ecological & social issues so I must commend them
on their effort. If they simply won because they looked beyond social
gaming & SMS twittering then I'm glad at Google honored their
commitment to creating a better planet for longer than just our
lifetimes. Perhaps Eco2Go will inspire people to look beyond their
mobile device as a toy to entertain them & start using it as a tool
for improving the planet.

If people are going to condemn Eco2Go, then please tell us about other
eco-applications submitted to the Challenge that should have won
instead.

I second Anthony. Google was looking for humanitarian uses for
Android, and this one fell in a very trendy socially responsible
niche. And it was very novel - I hate to say it but a lot of the apps
I've seen have been very "me too". It might not have as much "meat"
to it as some of the others, but it seems to do its intended job well.

with LBS added, most "me too" apps submitted to adc are practically novel.

with LBS removed, most "novel" apps submitted to adc are actually me too.

I don't like tooting my own horn, as they say, but since you asked for
applications that deal with social issues...

My application (which didn't win) is called Fluid Nexus and is
designed for activists or relief workers to communicate amongst each
other independent of a centralized cellular network. More
information, including source code, is available at http://fluidnexus.net
.

I entered the competition based on their desire for applications that
addressed "humanitarian and social issues". I know that there were
some other applications in this area, including one for ad-hoc, JIT
volunteering applications. I'll be very interested to see if any of
these other applications made the winner list. If not, then Google's
calling for these types of applications feels somewhat disingenuous.

Actually thanks for bringing your Fluid Nexus into this discussion as
an excellent example of the social technologies we need to consider.

I watched your video & read viewed your ReadMe images when you first
announced last month. I liked the idea, and if you don't mind my
commenting, can only guess that you lost points (at least from the
website screenshots) on effective use of Android technologies (none
that I saw) and perhaps polish of the app conceptual design overall
(e.g. security & authentication as you can't trust ad-hoc Bluetooth
networks).

There's always Round 2 though where you can showcase the location-
awareness & mapping benefits that would better utilize Android
capabilities and allow people to better coordinate spatially.

As you say though, maybe one of the other JIT collaboration apps won.

Great idea, Cow Bay.

From the majority of the posts I've seen for you, that name would be
an appropriate fit.

Up with cows....down with whiners.

Ok...I'm done messing with the bovines on this discussion group as
we're now way off topic. Sorry guys...let's hope they announce the
winners soon so we can get down to more fruitful discussions again.

I have to agree with Biosopher and Chris.

I think Eco2go is a real innovation:
For me, reducing my carbon footprint is desirable, but -lazy as I am-
hard to achieve. When i have to go somewhere or have to choose between
something or another, there are a lot of aspects to consider, and I
don't take the time to judge things from a "green" point of view, even
though i know i should. If Eco2Go can assist in this matter, I'll be
more than glad to use it. A well deserved Top 50.

Cow bay,
I understand you're frustrated 'cause you didn't win, but what's the
point in flaming? Just because your app wasn't chosen for the Top50
doesn't mean it's bad. Believe in your idea and get over it.

Biosopher,
this "discussion" leads nowhere. Let it go.

Cheers,
F

Don't want to hijack the thread, but I wanted to respond to your two
points...thanks for the comments.

With regard to effective use of Android technologies, there weren't
many for me to use. Bluetooth support was basically nonexistent, so I
had to write my own simulated version. The Bluetooth stack as it
exists doesn't even interface with the host computer's Bluetooth
interface; I had to write that layer myself. As for WiFi, well, there
isn't even an interface given (while for Bluetooth they seem to be
basing it own bluez). So I didn't even want to write my own simulated
WiFi interface before one exists. I didn't need/want to make my
interface flashy; the application is very basic to use from a UI point
of view so no animations are needed. As for other technologies, since
the whole point is to provide communication without using a
centralized network, I didn't want to use any technologies that
required access to a centralized network :-) Creating a "mapping"
layer or LBS would require contacting Google's servers which, given
the censoring of information in China, is a cause for concern...

As for conceptual design, well, security has been at the forefront of
my thought from the beginning. The application works much much better
if there are many nodes in the "network"; adding a security layer
decreases its effectiveness dramatically. In other systems of this
type (i.e., an application like txtmob) an entirely open message board
actually found wide use even though there wasn't any authentication or
"trust". On the other hand, having some means of limiting
transmission of messages is certainly necessary at times, and within
the README I wrote some text that mentioned this area as a place of
future improvement.

With that said, I hope that at least one of the winners was something
in this space. I guess we'll hopefully find out tomorrow.

you misunderstood my intent.

i just want to learn the difference among a winning app and a losing one,
based on adc's four criteria.

it is not about win vs loss. it is about truth, especially about how the
judge exercised 4th criteria.

Maybe you should've used OpenIntents

dude, it was suppose to be a joke on you saying:

> you misunderstood my intent.

(just to be clear, i meant no offence to you or OpenIntents)

anyway, i wonder what you'll say about our app. be sure to let me know
once the list is out.
It's late and i'm drunk and i don't make sense.. so i'll go to bed.

Agree. I don't think those criteria were followed. They can change the
rule in the middle of a contest.

dude - wow ... let's be more of a sore loser.

What's sad is all of these people that 100% expected to win.. I know
you are proud of the applications you made... just because you didn't
win $25,000 doesn't mean you have to cry about it... find a way to
make $25,000 yourself instead of it simply given to you! I have five
Android applications I haven't announced or didn't enter into the
contest... I am not interested in $25,000 being given to my
company ... I want to effectively showcase my work and see it through
to completion without worrying about deadlines... but the fact is -
$25,000 is NOTHING if you know you truly have an innovative program..

If you really do.. and I mean REALLY have something amazing that can
benefit people - put a price on it... get on the road... and sell it
to those clients (We developed applications that are B2B related and
use EVERY aspect of Android). $25,000 is ONE SALE of our program...
so find a way to make $50,000 from your program... then use that
$50,000 to program a ton more... then you should feel REAL
satisfaction that you have really made something people LOVE to use...

Android is revolutionary and will allow a complete innovation amongst
our societies. Stop fighting, work together, and let's really build
something strong and influential..

Bottom-line... we are all developers and we all want to build business
from development of Android products. In order to do this, we need to
have an extremely strong bottom-line reason to spend the money on an
Android phone over things such as Blackberry... the average consumer
could give a SHIT about the phone being open-source... but when I can
say "Oh, your into environment? Buy Android and get Eco2Go" "Oh, your
a farmer? Get Cow Bay and you will be able to benefit big time!"

As a network of developers, instead of competitors, we can see this
change ... stop crying about losing and talking about going to
iPhone... You go to iPhone and THEY OWN YOU! It doesn't have even
close t the potential or the possibilities (you limited to FUCKING
AT&T in USA which has NO data network what-so-ever (even their 3G
sucks))

So stop crying and let's start working together!

For eco2go
hey carbon tracing team
i have one point that you can add:

1) Also trace the carbon which comes from human body by breathing.
   benefit:
people will know how much they release carbon by breathing.
   not-benefit:
some time people will stop breathing to reduce carbon. :=))

come'on people how the 4th term was really judged????
i gave more importance in indispensability in my app.
