was eaten by the computer in the hotel yesterday just as I was telling
you all about the gorgeous Aloex Zahara (Warren in space race) who was
standing next to us at that point telling us about his new role in
"Kingdom Hospital".

but yes, MS did show up -= and did show us his scar - and did visually
confirm an answer to the question "boxers or briefs" and did stand and
chat to me while we had to pose THREE times for the photo as the film
ran out.

I suppose you'll want to know about the auction where bidding was
encouraged by the actors by means of adding some interesting "extras".
I had both Corin and Dougie Arthurs on my lap at one point... and as for
JR and Colin...... !!!

Will post an edited version later - got to sleep - long flight - meeting
tomorrow all day :-((

remaining faithful <g>

boxer briefs - or brief boxers - whichever you prefer - they were dark
blue / grey / black anyway.

Best gatecon yet (My third) highlights

- Sekh's party on the Weds night pre-con
- the guys from the special effects studio (finally!!)
- Martin Wood
- JR and Colin being total nutcases
- Alex Zahara and his "voices" - that man's vocal range is amazing
- Andrew Jackson who will be on Andromeda with Colin
- Corin's smile
- Teryl and Don's slot telling the tale of how Don got together with his
new wife (in Teryl's kitchen!)
- Michael showing up as the "tba" guest
- the attendees were one of the most friendly and enthusaistic audiences
I've seen, they just took pleasure in everything and everyone.

Why was that? Did they not know he was coming or just wanted to milk it for all

I heard a number of theories from people attending Gatecon itself

- not sure he would be able to be there so didn't want to get people
there under false pretences
- just wanted to give everyone a massive suprise
- he/they wanted to avoid some of his more enthusiastic fans showing up
after the groping incident in London.

I suspect it was more the first two because he was very relaxed and at
ease with everyone - but who knows, maye they knew the names of the
person(s) concerned and knew they weren't there. Whatever the reason it
was a great way to do it and his presence was much appreciated by
everyone - some of my friends nearly passed out when he appeared - one
was still shaking half an hour later<g>

oh, and I forgot - another highlight - I TOUCHED the Stargate! went on
the studio tour, sat in Gen Hammond's chair, took pics of the Starcharts....
and of course everything else!

Sounds great Diane. Can I ask you something?
When Michael Shanks came on stage did some of the crowd boo him? There is
someone out there in internet world saying this, and I thought surely not.

Hey Shelly

God I hope that didn't happen - how horrendous.
I always find it amazing in fandom how the expectations set for the Tv/movie
stars are so different to that which we would set ourselves in "real life"?
I mean, I know many people in different occupations who left their job
because it was no longer what they had hoped for, or wasn't challenging them
enough, or they wanted better money. And some of them were lucky enough to
get their old jobs back or a similar role after going off and trying
something new for a while. In some cases the role hadn't actually changed
much but taking the break made the person feel it was fresh and challenging
again; in other cases the "new" role was more to their liking. Certainly, we
never booed them for getting their job back!! It happened too with people
being made redundant/retrenched - a couple were offered jobs back as
contractors to fill a kind of gap.

Anyway - Diane's GateCon report (albeit brief - details! details!) was
brilliant and it made me want to hop a plane to Vancouver!

And if that horrible rumour about booing was true, I daresay there was
enough love in the room to counteract it ;)

From what I've heard, some members of the Shanks-hating "Horsewomen" group were
boasting on a list that when he was announced, they said "About f*cking time"
and got up and walked out. I seriously doubt this behavior was noticed among
the enthusiastic screaming and rushing *into* the ballroom that ensued, among
the vast majority of attendees.

Sorry, I had to laugh when I heard this. I would expect something of this
nature, as last year, the same small group was shouting nasty comments and
booing whenever MS' name was mentioned onstage. These were the same people who
urgently advised the con staff to pack the premesis with security to "watch out
for the SDJ" and the Daniel fans, because they were certain to attack Corim
Nemec and behave badly, when he came to the con.

Obviously, it was a case of projection.

abolutely not - he got a major cheer from everyone there, and at no
point did I hear a rumour that anyone had booed - and believe me the
word on something like that would have gone around pretty quickly. Some
people just seem to enjoy spreading rumours like that. the whole con
was an overwhelmingly positive event and don't let anyone try to
convince you otherwise - Corin also got a massively warm welcome too BTW -
personally I think most people there wanted to have their cake and eat
it - ie keep both characters.

not true IMO Megan - and if there did happen to be one sad solitary anti-
fan who behaved like that they would not have been heard above the
general jubilation at seeing MS - more likely they would have been
lynched actually - and as no lynching occured I assume there was no
booing!

If they did, I was sitting in the first row and didn't hear any. As
soon as the audience recognized him, the room lit up with camera
flashes and screams. He smiled, and as he walked up to the front of
the stage, he commented between his teeth "I won't be able to see for
a week."

The shock of seeing him was unbelieveable. When the quilt came down,
he had his back turned towards the audience. It wasn't until he
turned to face us were we able to tell who it was.

Virtually all fans can separate actor from characters, and behave accordingly.
You'll have a few nitwits who can't separate the two, or are are so in lust or
hate the character so much that they're a problem for cons, but that's rare.

While there are some fans who seem to delight in vivisecting actors (Michael
and Corin are the popular targets, and amazingly, Amanda too) on some lists,
most fans are mature enough to realize, hey, this is a business, and shouldn't
take out their feelings on those actors.

I just wish there were more con reports out.

Yeah, been there. but last year, there were much bigger fan-written reports out
on lists, etc. They seem mysteriously absent this year, as though people had
nothing to report. Maybe there was no real news.

Your habit of bringing the SJHW up and telling everyone that they (we)

not very likely to happen IMO

I think most people in the newsgroup have seen enough of Leah's posts to
know "where she's coming from" Kelly. I suspect many people have (like
me) killfiled her long ago and the rest are well able to make up their
own minds about what she says. There is an element in fandom that seems
to delight in trying to divide people - to find negativity, to spread
nasty rumours - sometimes about other fans, other times about the actors
and their private lives. It's boring and unpleasant but those people's
real lives must be very empty if they need to create such an exotic
fantasy one.

Simple fact is that I have not seen a single negative comment about the
con. anywhere on line from anyone who was *there* - all sections of
fandom were there, and all were very happy - and all got along very well.
Shippers teased Daniel fans and vice versa, Jonasarians and Daniel fans
were even found late at night together happily drinking and laughing in
room parties. No-one will convince me that this was not the best SG1
con *ever* - because, unlike Leah, you and I were there to witness it.

Got home okay....man, my legs were tired from standing all weekend! BUT!
I would do it all again in a second *g* I've been having sneeze attacks
all week, but I think it's more from 'welcome to fall' allergies rather
than con crud. We did have one of the HW come down with a very bad
cold, but she had a heck of a weather shock coming to Vancouver from
Hawaii, so I think she had a climate reaction.

People are still stuck there? Wow! This is the first I've heard of it!

I think this con was the most relaxing and laid-back of all four. The C4
were even awake and smiling on Monday! Always a very good sign. *g*

I can vouch on this as I worked as a con volunteer last year for the
Q&As and at no time were any names or group names mentioned. Enough
opinions were voiced on the bboards where having security on stand-by
didn't hurt.

There are some people in this fandom who need to grow up in their
behavior.

Thanks Diane. It is a shame that different sections of Stargate SG1 fans
want to divide us all etc. I mean, my favourite SG1 character is Daniel, and
I adore Michael Shanks, but I am also a SG1 fan, and I like
RDA,AT,CJ,DSD,TR,CC etc and their characters on the show.
I thought that was what Stargate SG1 fans were all about.

the actors did as well :)

In fact, several of us HW had pictures taken with him.

Try the Colin Cunningham list. I especially like the HW who left to stand in
line for an upcoming autograph instead, and everyone kept spotting her and
excitedly telling her if she knew who was in the auditorium at the moment, as
they rushed to see.

>>Don't remember a event of people booing last year, either, when MS' name
was mentioned on the stage. Is your memory intact? Or are you imagining
things again?<<

Sorry, revisionist history won't help you, here. We've got some of this on
audio tape, as several of the nasties were sitting in the row right behind us.
I can throw an accusation of lying as easily as you.

>>FYI, the con people weren't told by anyone last year who they needed to
'watch out for'.<<

That's *really* funny, because we actually had friendly conversations with some
of them and they *told* us that they had these prior warnings. In addition, one
member of the SDJ is on the main convention staff, and told us otherwise,
before the convention.

>>They can read, and they do listen to what to what the
studio says, and can actually think for themselves. The studio didn't
need anyone to tell them, either...all they had to do was read their

So letters saying "Bring back Daniel Jackson" were interpreted as "We will kill
your guest actors?" Wow, that's a pretty interesting piece of interpretive
reading.

>Your habit of bringing the SJHW up and telling everyone that they (we)
are responsible to all the hate and woes of the fandom (on and offline)

Riiiiiiight. I was just listening to Seldear and Allie Snow singing his
praises, the other day.

>As for the problems that (thankfully) did not materialize being a case of

Oh, you mean like writing to demand more Ship? I found it hysterical how fast
"Trust the Powers That Be" went out the window, when the announcements about
MS's return went out.

But then, we imagined the whole fan fracas over the past couple of years,
didn't we? It's all in our collective imaginations. Much of it never occurred
on alt.tv.stargate-sg-1, but it's still there in virtually every other fan
forum for all to see.

But I hardly mind, since things have developed very nicely, in the end.

Okay, I do need to disagree. Everybody in fandom tends to paint a favorite
forum in a good light, or an opposing one in a bad light. THere is no forum
that's perfect. Gateworld has it's share of arguments and flamewars just as OS
does (or any list). The most volatile topics seem to be ship or Daniel Jackson.
I've seen threads taken down on GW due to flaming, then come back up minus a
lot of nasty posts. Both GW and OS have had threads that the moderators should
have moderated a lot earlier, or just plain old moderated. Neither is perfect.

There are a few fans (a handful out of all of fandom) who continue to bicker
and fight amongst each other over old news. How many times can a fan keep after
the old Save Daniel Jackson campaign? It's done and over. Let's move on. How
many times can people keep saying Jonas sucks? Ditto.

Yes, tptb can think for themselves, but there was at least one fan (named

the daniel jackson fans were and how security was being hired because of them.
It was ridiculous. But then some fans need to get a life ;)

But anyway, is anybody going to write a con report where those who did not go
can read about what the actor said. They did say something at their talks,
right? it wasn't just all boxers/briefs questions? ;)

That line has got to be the Gatecon motto!

Okay, am I the only one here who is not getting it? All this talk about
MS and his undies is all fine and dandy but we're missing the real point here.
Who is MS? Oh yeah, right he's the actor who plays that Daniel who was
cruel and nasty to COL. MAKEPEACE when the poor guy was promoted
to SG-1
I mean, ex-cuse me and FCOL, and any other suitable Jackisms, but
Col. Makepeace was there and I wasn't <sob>
What about him? Boxers or briefs? Tell me please. I need details, FCOL!

Ah yes - how dare someone go for an autograph rather than sit for a panel.
As I recall, this happens all the time and isn't particular to MS.

I thought people weren't allowed to tape things in the GC auditorium,
because it was against their rules?

Just because someone doesn't praise an actor for everything he or she does,
doesn't lead to the conclusion that they must "hate" that actor. Hatred is
a pretty strong word. Disliking someone because of his acting abilities or
his public persona (because face it, *none* of the fans know his private
persona) doesn't equate to hating him. Besides, even if Seldear and Alli
*did* hate MS - it's their opinion and their right to do so. Deal with it.
The HW as a group do not hate MS and have said so time and time again.

I remember feeling a bit betrayed, yes. What of it? After some reflection
and thought, I calmed down and went right back to the idea that they've
always given a good show and had faith that they will continue to do so. I
had an irrational emotion, as humans tend to do. You're going to sit there
and gloat "na, na" in my face because of it?

You know, I haven't written *one* letter, not for MS, not for ship, not for
anything - because I *do* trust TPTB, because it's not my show and not my
place to make demands for anything. If they stop delivering a decent show,
I'll change the channel. Sorry if you can't deal with it, but that's your
problem, not mine.

The whole fan fracas existed because of many, many sides and many, many
fans. Including you. There is plenty of blame to go around, but some of us
have moved on and accepted things. Watching you bring in your
"shanks-hating HW" and second-hand accusations, it appears that you have
not.

> But I hardly mind, since things have developed very nicely, in the end.

So why bring it up if you don't mind? Why make unnecessary and untrue
statements when they aren't relevant except to inflame other fans? Why does
it seem to bother you so much that not everyone loves MS or Daniel?

As to how things have developed, that's your opinion and you are welcome to
it. Mine differs greatly.

Not on the CC list. In fact, I'm fairly certain that if any of the HW
*had* posted on the CC list, I would have heard about it. It's also
interesting to note that the HW in question (who left 5 minutes before the
end of the panel so as to get in line for the photos, and not at the
beginning of the panel as you claimed in your last post) 1. didn't need to
tell anyone who was in the auditorium, and 2. were fairly far back in the
preliminatry line, as many MANY other people had also rushed out prior to
the end of the panel to get a good spot in line. *gasp* And they weren't
HW! The horror!!!!!

Your SDJ person on the con staff (that would be Rowan) was informed about
oh, March of last year that there were several member of the production
crew and cast who were very leery of coming to Gatecon 2002 based on the
mail they had been receiving at the studio. That comment came directly
from Joseph Mallozzi. Feel free to ask him.

That didn't happen after we heard that MS was returning. Show me where it
did.

I didn't imagine being called a slut and a liar, and a Daniel/MS hater. I
didn't imagine that the SDJ infiltrated every list they could, and cried
*foul* when the member of that list didn't drop everything and pledge
allegiance to the cause of 'saving the show -- bring back our God Daniel
Jackson'. I didn't imagine being blamed for things I never even dreamed of
doing, on or offline.

Your utter conviction that the HW all despise MS is starting to *really*
grate on my nerves, considering that it's an untruth. Understand that
someone can be critical of someone else and not hate them. Or is
everything so black and white to you?

Your opinion is that things delevoped quite nicely. You got your 'one and
only' back. Congrats! Just don't be pointing the finger at me and mine
when your beloved character doesn't do exactly what you want him to do, and
takes the rest of the wonderful ensemble cast that we've all watched for 7
years down into the drain with him.

And that, my *dear*, is my opinion. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Kelly - you *really* should understand by now that you can only have
friends in fandom that agree with *everything* you believe - that like
the characters you like - that have the same obsessions as you. So if
Sel and Allie say something then you must, by definition agree with them.
You have no powers of independent thought, you must have no differences
of opinion however slight because then how can you still be friends with
them????

The fact that at the con there were shippers and Daniel fans who had fun
together and forged new friendships / renewed old ones is not something
that makes sense within some sections of fandom. the fact that these
friends can disagree about who are the fabulous actors and what are the
best plot lines is beyond their experience. I met a lovely woman at the
con who *loves* the Sam / Jack ship but whose favourite character is
Daniel and was practically swooning when MS appeared on stage (and was
literally shaking after the photo with him<g>). She would have been
gobsmacked to be told that she was not allowed to hold such
contradictory "likes". that's what normal healthy fandom is about - and
that is what Gatecon was about, not the kind of fanwars that Leah is
trying to stir up again. IMO it is simply sticking in her throat that it
was such a wonderful experience for *all* fans and that there were no
divisions.

probably just as well - there are actually a couple of others saying

preferred to see Amanda and the other RDA (I know at least one other

Oh, and I find myself corrected....the two HW who were supposed to have
left the panel early *didn't*...However, they *were* in the first group
of numbers (101-150) for the photos...and there were about 30 people
ahead of them in line.

So....whoever told you that any of the HW left the panel early was
mistaken. Not one of us left the room...unless, of course, you count
*me*, because I was in and out of the room at the back door....because I
was on volunteer duty. Bad me.

Sel and Alli and the rest of us don't share a brain...altho, sometimes it

This is all utterl delightful. Once again, so much vitriol and revisionism over

Yes, please, by all means go on proclaiming to one and all that the entire
ruckus of the past couple of years was purely in my imagination; that the SDJ

invented, said or done in online fandom, anywhere against him. Anyone who every
heard such a thing was hallucinating. There are no live journals out there
where MS is attacked; there were never any forum or mailing list battles, and
if they were, they were solely precipitated by insane Daniel fans. And anything
such fans say is a lie.

Thank you for proving my point (and providing much amusement along the way).

I don't believe anyone said anything about the last few years - you're the
one who started making flying accusations - everyone else was just enjoying
a nice gatecon thread. BTW - if you want to be all technical about it, the
SDJ *did* create an "opposition" because they were the ones who started
telling the rest of us that the show would suck eggs without Daniel/MS.
Obviously telling the rest of the fans what they should believe or like is
going to create opposition. The SDJ should at least take some
responsibility for it, but I doubt they'd admit that.

There was never anything

Hatred and dislike of an actor are two different things. Criticizing his
public persona or acting abilities comes with the whole "fame" deal - so I'm
not sure why you'd be surprised that there are people who don't worship the
man. It's their right, just as it is your right to criticise Jonas or CN
or Sam or AT or any actor that walks across the screen. Why can you not
accept that other people don't think the way that you do? Why do you care
so much about what is said about this one actor? It's not healthy.

>And anything
> such fans say is a lie.

Not necessarily, but when you start making accusations about fan behavior
that did or didn't happen, you'd better know what you're talking about.
Since you weren't there, and the *proof* you provided about the mailing
lists was faulty - how can you expect anyone to believe you? It's either
that or you don't care what's true or not and have decided to rail against
the HW whenever you get the chance. Either way, I think I'll take your
advice and kilfile you now that I've learned how. I found that avoiding the
SDJ haunts has made my fandom experience much more enjoyable. Just my
opinion....

Well the one McGyver ep I saw a bit of had RDA on a horse being
airlifted up in a helicopter - so RDA can ride, Jack is from Minesota,
so I would guess that yes, Jack can ride horses. Anyway, Lisa could

don't you want to hear about Corin sitting on my lap? or did I aleady
mention that? <g> or JR and I under the quilt? or the time Dougie Arthur
entwined himself with me to sing "happy birthday"? - or being sung to by
Jay Acavone? or having a glass of wine too many at the wrap party and
sleeping through the fire alarm which was set off on the floor above me?
or Teryl telling me she loved my hair and was seriously thinking of
doing the same with hers (length wise it's now more Jack than Sam <g> )
or JR and Colin snogging on stage to up the bids for the charity auction?
or the *boys* and the lipstick kisses? or Martin Wood's wonderful smile?
or the panel with the special effects studio guys?

did I mention we all had FUN!???

I'm addicted to Jack - but then, a good therapy hour of Jack probably
couldn't cure that, eh? I'm willing to try ;)

Yes, please, again!

It does sound like it was more fun this year than last. I haven't heard of
any line problems (other than them being long) and that all the actors
stayed to make sure everyone got their photos and autos.

now in your case I would suggest aversion thereapy - you just get him

LOL - not sure whether it was because I reminded him of his mother - and
he could see I had a sturdy enough frame to take it. It was in the
auction for one of his "Jonas" team shirts - yes I got it! it will be
very useful when trying to fight my way through the thorns to pick fruit
next year, good strong stuff.

the thing I heard said more than anything else was that the "old timers"
actually didn't much care who was up there on stage as most of us were
there to have a holiday with friends - there were 38 "Gategoers" on my
flight out from the UK, we met up at the airport, chatted on the flight,
and put faces to names we knew online. There were a whole load of trips
and activities planned for the few days *before* the con started - so
people got to know each other and were well integrated as a group before
Friday. At the start of the con Alan got various groups of people to
stand up - including anyone who was there for the first time and didn't
know anyone else - to make sure everyone knew who might be shy / unsure /
alone.

Elyse has commented on the lack of con reports - I think that's because
for many of us (a) it's our holiday - we're not there as reporters (b)
most of our memories are of stuff that is not "major breaking news" but
of jsut having fun with friends. (c) there were loads of new faces this
year -= more newbies than "old timers" so maybe all the usual report
writers just weren't there....

LOL, remember some of the reactions I got though to signing Corin's birthday
card? Some just couldn't understand how I could sign the card when I
disliked Jonas so much. Strangely enough though Jonas and Corin aren't the
same, Jonas the character was a limp, wet blanket, Corin the actor is
completely different and I saw no reason not to wish him a happy birthday.
Makes sense to me anyway.

I *think* I'd get on better, conversation wise, with RDA than Jack -
OTOH, from what I've seen of RDA on talk shows, I find Jack a tad more
attractive (not that RDA isn't drop dead gorgeous of course... etc etc)
but the Jack character just has that *something* - the old "wounded

Well let me think.... I recall a MacGyver episode in which
RDA rode quite well, although it could have been a stunt
double for all I know. As for Jack, the only horses I can
think of that we've seen on SG1 were in 'Emancipation', but
Jack didn't ride any of them that I recall. Jack does like
dogs and dogs are kind of like little horses, so probably.
And you can't forget that "undomesticated equines" will
not drive Teal'c away from Jack. :-)

That is all I know about Jack and horses. However if Jack
treats riding horses like fishing you've got nothing to
worry about.

They were indeed. Its cancellation was a criminal decision, in my
opinion. I might get the DVDs when they're released over here so I can
rewatch if there's going to be a film. We didn't tape them to keep so I
can't do a rewatch any other way.

well - if he gets to be the new Doctor I could relive my chilhood and
dream of being one of his assistants again - the number of times we
saved the galaxy - you have no idea! oh, and I'd bring back K9 (but
give him legs so he could handle stairs!)
