Kira is Bajoran, from the planet Bajor, about which DS9 orbited before
the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole, in the Bajoran system. She is the
liason officer from Bajor to the Federation and DS9 and First Officer of
DS9.

Hi, Richard,

Kira is Bajoran. The station 'Deep Space Nine' is actually a Bajoran
station. The Federation is only there in an advisory capacity. This
is why Sisko was given a Bajoran first officer, Kira also acts as
liason between the Federation officers on the station and the Bajoran
government.

I'm not sure how late into the series you began watching, but the
station originally orbited Bajor which is, I believe 6 hours away by
runabout. The station was moved to its present position when the
wormhole was discovered to stake a claim on it before the Cardassians
did.

Actually, DS9 is of Cardassian design and was left to the Bajorans when
the Cardassians went home.

Which brings up another question--What is the correct pronunciation of
"Bajor"? Is the "J" soft or hard? I usually use the soft, as does
Benjamin, but is that just another fallacy of being a stupid hu-man?
