Anyone have a clue where the whole ghost town/creepy guy thing
comes from. Looks too much like a reference, but I'm not identifying it.

The exact line from the show was, I believe, "Well, my work is done here."
This was the same line word-for-word uttered by Leon Kompowski at the end of
the "Stark Raving Dad" episode; I thought it was an amusing reference to a
previous show, although I've no doubt that this line is frequently used else-
where.
