If episodes are filmed in advance, how was it decided which would air first?
For example, if Henry Please Come Home was the 2nd episode filmed, how did it
wind up being the 9th one to air?
Also, were there any episodes that were done but never aired?

Can't answer that question regarding MASH but I know it often happens. My
daughter was in ep 5 of "Monty" (a very short lived Henry Winkler series) and
they aired it as ep 3. Thank goodness they did ... the 3rd ep was the last one
aired! :-)

There are a number of reasons why an episode could be pulled forward or
held back.

It could be a lot better than some already in the can so that the better
shows air earlier, or episodes could be held back for some time because it
may have ended up slightly below par. I can't think of any MASH episodes
that applies to, but there was a 'Bilko' that was held back for about six
months before being screened.

There's also the possibility that a show might need additional pick-up
shots, which could delay final editing.

Other considerations might relate to a big name guest star or other behind
the scenes matter - for example some Diana Rigg 'Avengers' episodes were
pulled forward to show the costumes designed for retail sale, so the
designer wanted them screened before the release for subliminal publicity.

Other facts are sweeps week, where the big-gun episodes air, a better
balance - i.e. episodes without location work slotted into a run with
location filming so the location ones are spread out better. This affected
'The Prisoner' and other shows. And probably affected MASH at some point.

MASH-wise, the block of episodes in Season 8 recorded before Radar left
were to cover his absence, as well as episodes which aired after he left.

This doesn't actually answer you question though.....

I believe David Brunt's response is the most accurate response:

"It could be a lot better than some already in the can so that the better

The answer to your last question - > were there any episodes that were done but

>

I can't speak beyond the first fpur seasons, but in that time, every show we
filmed was aired (although 8 different unproduced scripts were "eaten" - paid
for but never filmed, considered too poor.

& were there any scripts that were written but for whatever reason not
filmed?

or plots that weren't used? i was a teen during the original run, but
even then i thought of hawkeye going on leave to maine to visit his
father. reading this NG i've learned i wasn't alone.

this idea must've occurred to the writers. any reason(s) it wasn't used?

See Cory's answer.

Ebay had a couple of mid-period scripts last year which appeared to be
genuine abandoned storylines.

I imagine there were a number of spec scripts and ones that didn't pan out
that fell by the wayside throughout the run, as with any series.

Depending on time constraints, unless they really weren't working out
scripts might be rewritten until they were workable. It's not unknown for
emergency scripts to be rushed through to fill gaps left by those scrapped.

While we're on the subject of MASH and ebay, a while back, maybe a year or so
ago, I went on ebay searching for MASH items. I came across someone who was
selling MASH scripts and I placed a bid of $60.00.
Thankfully, someone sent me an e-mail regarding my bid and the seller. It seems
that the seller was typing these up himself, bringing them to the photocopy
center and selling them as original.
I cancelled that bid as fast as I could log on.
After researching this, I found out that several people were dupped by this
"person."

My only advice: BUYER BEWARE ON EBAY. PERIOD. I got very lucky that this person
e-mailed me and saved me some hard earned cash!

Yes, it does!
