Do not pay Gateway $200+ to reset send your laptop to the factory to
have your BIOS password rest. Essentially all you have to do is move
a jumper on the motherboard press the power button move the jumper
back and viola the system goes back to the default values.

Here is a somewhat step by step guide:

First remove all power sources. This means unplug your laptop from
the wall and take out the battery. You don't want to accidentaly fry
something. Also be carefull about static electricity. Computer chips
are easily damaged by small shocks.

To get to the place on the mother board where the jumper is you need
to remove the keyboard which requires that you remove the part of the
case that covers the monitor hinge. To remove the afforementioned
cover remove the 4 screws that hold it in place on the on the back of
the laptop. Then fold the LCD display all the way back so that it is
open as far as possible. Carefully use a flathead screwdriver to
remove the cover.

You should now be able to see the 4 screws that hold the keyboard in
place.
Remove these screws and slide the keyboard back and gently set it on
the display.

You should now be able to see the jumper located to the left of the
multi-colored power cable. The jumper is sitting on the 2 leftmost of
three pins. It looks something like this:

Use a pair of tweezers or needle nose pliers to remove the jumper
being carefull not to drop it into the insides of your computer. Then
place it onto the 2 rightmost pins so that it looks like this:

Put your battery back in and press the power button. The machine will
attempt to boot and immeadiantly shut back down. It has just wiped
out the BIOS!!!

Take your battery back out.

Put the jumper back into it's original position.

--

Put the keyboard and cover back on and insert the battery. Startup the
computer. You will see a CMOS checksum error. Simply press F2 to
enter setup and then save and exit. You will no longer have the
checksum error and the BIOS will be back to the default configuration.
