NHL EXPANSION AND ENTRY DRAFT
The National Hockey League 2000 Expansion Draft, to be held on Friday, June
23 at 7 a.m. MT in Calgary. The Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild
will select 26 players each in the Expansion Draft, two from each NHL club
except the Nashville Predators and Atlanta Thrashers, who played their
inaugural NHL seasons in 1998-99 and 1999-2000, respectively. The NHL will
host a press conference at 4:00 pm CDT to announce the Wild and Blue Jackets
selections.
As a result of the draft drawing earlier this month, the Minnesota Wild will
pick third overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. The Wild also have the
following picks in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft: 33rd (2nd Round), , 98th (4th
Round), 131st (5th Round), 169th (6th Round), 198th (7th Round), 213th (7th

traded their 3rd Round Pick (#67)and their 4th Round Pick in the 2002 NHL
Entry Draft to Dallas in exchange for Manny Fernandez and Brad Lucowich.
The Expansion Draft will take place on Friday, June 23rd, and the Entry
Draft on Saturday and Sunday, June 24th (Rounds 1-3) and 25th (Rounds 4-9)
from the Canadian Airlines Saddledome in Calgary, AB.
The Columbus Blue Jackets have priority in the Expansion Draft, which allows
them to choose between having the first pick of available
goaltenders/forwards or the first pick of available defensemen. The Wild
will then have the second and third pick of defensemen and then alternating
until the process is complete. Following Columbus' first selection in the
Expansion Draft, the Wild will then select first from the remaining
category, either goaltenders/forwards or defensemen. The Blue Jackets will
determine the category from which they will select first from on June 23rd,
the date of the Expansion Draft. Each club was allowed to protect either (i)
up to five defensemen, nine forwards and one goaltender, or (ii) up to three
defensemen, seven forwards and two goaltenders.
Each club was required to expose for claim at least the following players
who meet the experience requirements indicated below: ONE GOALTENDER --
For clubs protecting one goaltender, no experience requirement.
For clubs protecting two goaltenders, either 10 NHL games played in the
1999-2000 season or 25 NHL games played over the last two seasons (1998-99
and 1999-2000).

A goaltender must have played in a minimum of 31 minutes in a game before it
would qualify as a game played for these purposes.

Games played include regular season and playoff games.

ONE DEFENSEMAN --
Either 40 NHL games played in the 1999-2000 season or 70 NHL games played
over the last two seasons (1998-99 and 1999-2000).
Games played include regular season and playoff games.

TWO FORWARDS - Either 40 NHL games played in the 1999-2000 season or 70 NHL
games played over the last two seasons (1998-99 and 1999-2000).

Games played include regular season and playoff games.

Exempt from the Expansion Draft are (i) all first and second-year pros and
(ii) unsigned draft choices (except unsigned draft choices drafted from
European clubs in the 1996 Entry Draft or before and who remain unsigned).

The number of players in each category to be selected by Columbus and
Minnesota will be at least three goaltenders, eight defensemen and 13
forwards. No club may lose more than one goaltender or one defenseman.
