When Jeremy got stupid penalties for excessive celebrations and
unsportsmanlike conduct, I wrote it off as his emotions that fired the team
up. When he eschewed the Giants in favor of Miami in the offseason, I wrote
it off as a guy who was just more comfortable with the rest of the Miami
players. When he dropped passes, I'd say 'you'll make a circus catch to
make up for it when we really need it.' When he got injured all the time, I
said it was because he was such a warrior.
But you know what? As much as he claimed to only want to win, what aside
from demanding the ball did he do to show this desire?
He was constantly showing up his quarterback. When told that blocking would
help the team win, he pouted and complained about not being used properly.
And when he was injured and his teammates went on the winning streak to end
all winning streaks, he pouted about it before finally deciding that he felt
too uncomfortable to even play for the team.
Fuck you, Jeremy Shockey. A ton of talent but no heart, not really. Being
selfish is not heart and that's all you were, a selfish jerk who would
rather catch 100 passes on a .500 team than win a Super Bowl and catch half
that many.
You didn't want to be a Giant anymore? Fine. Take your ass somewhere else.
They'll find out about you soon enough.
I was extremely happy with the Super Bowl run we had last year. I am even
happier this second, though, because it is obvious to me Shockey did not
deserve to win that ring so he didn't. The team did. The team remains, the
cancer is gone.
People compared Shockey to Mark Bavaro but Shockey wasn't fit to carry
Bavaro's jock. Bavaro was humble, valued being a complete tight end and not
just a glorified receiver, didn't care about personal stats and gave his
heart and soul for the team. He made the Giants better in ways Shockey
would never even be able to comprehend, let alone achieve.
I was happy to see Jeremy Shockey in a Giants uniform. Now, I am even
happier to see that he is not.
I know it was you Jeremy. You broke my heart. You broke my heart...

and you ended your post with an asfny-g tradition ... terrific ...
I harbor no ill feelings toward Shockey.
Was he selfish? yes
Did he say stupid things? yes
Did he show up Eli? yes
Was he a cancer like T.O. or even Chad Johnson? No, not until he wanted out
anyway and Reese properly didn't let it fester.
But you can say those same things about Burress and dozens of other good
players around the league.
I can't see how people have this romantic vision of players anymore, I just
don't get it, that went out the door with me at about age 15 (30 years
ago!).
This is it in a nutshell IMO.
Shockey, always wanting to be known as the best TE in the game, was mad that
he hasn't been among the league leaders statistically at his position since
his days with Peyton, he wants to catch 75- 80 passes a year and get
downfeild.
He knew he would never do that in Coughlins offense so he bitched til we had
no choice but to trade him. The rest... the SB sideline thing..the leak...
that was all just a beard, he wants to be in an offense that allows him to
shine.
Period. End of story. Now Shockey is the enemy, just like King Parcells or
anyone else who leaves the team.
But I don't know how you can blame a guy for seeking what he wants from his
profession, selfish or not.
If i'm in a situation I don't like I would leave too and have, even if it
means a pay cut. It's more important to be happy.

I totally disagree. It's a sad day for me. Shockey wasn't perfect by far
but I would take him on my team any day.
If you think he was selfish, why don't you ask Boss who spent more time
with him teaching him the position.
Sure Shockey complained about not getting the ball and didn't like blocking
but he practiced hard and became one of the best blocking TE's in the game.
I hope he gets his 80 catches this year and stays healthy.

I'm somewhat surprised that you Giant fans have been so concerned
about losing him when your team went on an incredible run without him.
Seems like you should be quite comfortable. It's not like he won the
Super Bowl for your team. Quite the contrary.

I think whether you like Shockey or not most people here would tell you the
Giants offense would be better with Shockey.
While Boss did fine in the absence of Shockey the real slack was picked up
by the emergence of rookie Steve Smith at 3rd WR who would of course still
be out there with Shockey at times. Think of the headaches for a DC trying
to cover Plax,Toomer, Shockey and Smith
But Reese did the right thing, Shockey had to go because HE wanted to go.
Not because the Giants believed in any of that stupid shit about him not
being in the lineup made Eli better or any of that other garbage.
A lot of that garbage was started by the media. They went so far as get the
"expert' opinion of a guy who couldn't even beat out Anthony Wright or
Lorenzen. Some people on sportsradio have even speculated that the Saints
leaked some of the trade rumors to stir the pot because Sean Payton really
wanted Shockey.
First off let's not get carry away with this best blocking TE in the
game. He was adequate but far from the best.
However, this is actually the part I am with Iommi and you. Why force
someone to do something that isn't his dominant attribute? After all,
when you have LT you don't force him to play coverage more to get LT
to be a more "complete LB", no, you rush him and rush him and rush him
because that's what he does best, rushing the QB and tackle RBs in the
backfield.
Same thing with Shockey. He's a prolific route runner that can get
open, and when he does good it ignites his teammates. Why Coughlin
and the coaches refuse to take advantage of his best attributes, but
instead wanted him to block most of the time is beyond me.
Personally I still think Coughlin and co. are old-school coaches that
doesn't really appreciate the prima donna attitude of Shockey. Also
it's well-known Coughlin's offense never have too much plays to
feature the TEs but instead focuses on the WRs.
The point is at the end of the day Shockey has to go. I feel bad for
him because had Fassel still be the head coach I would voice a
different opinion. Shockey needs to play for a coach that would
maximizes his great attributes. Peyton seems committed to feature him
in the offense, and I wish him well. Don't be surprise if Shockey
puts up Ben Coates numbers down in NO.
They tried a 3-way to land Jason Taylor, but it failed.
I wouldn't go that crazy, I have confidence our D-Coord will get the D
ready to go now that he has a full year to work with the team, and the
Giants offense never really needed Shockey anyway so it won't be a big
loss there either.
He was a benign cyst. You still have them removed.

Preach on, brother. Praise the Lord.
It's definitely the Saints leaking the shits. Usually when a team
really want a player they would leak garbage out to make the player
feel like his old team doesn't want him and "disrespects him" by
putting him on the market.

This article says Shockey at the end was paranoid and suspicous from
management to players that they are all out to get him. I have to say
there are definitely something funny going on around Shockey. He's
getting bad inputs.
In football, all brawn and no brains makes for a heartbreaker every
time. I'm long over what could've been with Shockey, the good news is
that the hangover is a short one, especially for anyone DTing now as
opposed to prior to last season.

NY Giants 2007 Super Bowl Champions!
IMO, I think one thing that would have made me go the route that the Giant's
staff did was that once Shockey got the ball, especially when open, he
became reckless. I think he was much higher a risk for fumbling than other
receivers. He's the one guy when he had the ball that made me cringe and
hope he didn't fumble it away. He'd also struggle for an extra yard or two
and was known to fumble doing so. I'll be very curious in party town (well,
that aspect too) to see if he gets the ball more if he has a turnover
tendency or problem.

Actually, I will be. But would I put him on my fantasy team? You bet!
