I think it would be a guaranteed championship for the Lakers if this
Payton-Malone thing works out, but I'm just worried about getting my
hopes up only to have the whole thing come crashing back to reality. Is
"The Glove" really unselfish enough to accept the MLE in order to win a
ring or is he just interested in getting another monster contract from a
guaranteed loser like Milwaukee? His agent has even said that he will
have to decide which is more important--money or winning. Also, ESPN is
reporting that the Miami Heat may try to lure Malone with that extra $4
million that Anthony Carter left on the table. I can't imagine Malone
actually wanting to play for the Heat, but that's just another suitor in
the mix trying to cock-block the Lakers. I know a lot of people are
talking about the Malone-Payton scenario and making it sound like a done
deal, but I'm worried that Payton will decide not to take the $4.7
million exception which means Malone won't want to come either and then
the whole thing just falls apart. If this happens, it's going to be a
major disappointment and it's going to make things that much tougher
going into next season. There's no way they will be able to get anywhere
near the talent of Malone and Payton for only $6.2 million total which
is why it is so important that they close these deals. I know that they
could still go after players like Juwan Howard, P.J. Brown, Alonzo
Mourning, Scottie Pippen and other names that have have been thrown
around, but no 2 players could make a bigger difference to this team
than Malone and Payton and they probably couldn't even convince 2 other
guys to play for the same money. The sooner this deal gets done, the
better............I just hope I'm not setting myself up for a major
disappointment.

If this were a prediction contest, I'd say it's not going to happen. I just
don't believe Payton thinks a title is more important than money. Hopefully
I get proven wrong.
