need to address in this country, especially post-9/11. However, people

With all due respect, I think you're missing the point here. With the
exception of Albert Belle and Chris Truby, baseball players aren't menaces
to national security. False documents *can* be a serious issue, but in
this case, they're not. They merit a slap on the wrist, but deportation
is silly: it just takes away resources from where they're needed more
urgently. It's like how copyright infringement is a bad thing, but
no-one's *really* going to care if you have two .mp3s on your hard drive.
A more serious problem, IMHO, is people like Hoover, who take advantage of
insecure times to further their own agendas.

An interesting twist on this is the first player I was aware of who
lied about his age. Rollie Sheldon.
Didn't use a false birth certificate or anything. Just omitted the
time he spent in the Marines from his life story and allowed
people to draw the wrong conclusion about his age. Came clean
after he made the Yankees.
His logic was that if he'd told the truth about his age he'd never
have received an honest look. And he was probably right.
IIRC there are some details in Ball Four.
