Just checking the news quick 'fore I go out to session.....

It's like 70 here in Boston, sunny, cool breeze......

Too cool not to be skating.......

Yup Janet is a girl.

Wow, she skates. Cool.

I was psyched to see soooo many girls snowboarding this last week (I was
out rippin' around Stratton, Magic, Bromley for 5 days straight!),
wondering why not so many skate. Theories? Why is snowboarding cool and
skating a tomboy thang? Probably something to do with the fashion or
the colors or something.....

Keep sending fave skate bands....the list is growing!

Quote of last week: (while I was buying new wheels, replacing a broken
kingpin, buying bearings to replace the ones with popped seals, and
feverously trying to get the locknut on a stripped hanger (need a new one
of them too), one of the grommets that was trying to see me on buying two
*pink* wheels and two _purple_ ones looks up at me after hearing $63 and
says, "Hey mister while you're at it, why not a new deck too?"

Reply: "Son, this *is* a new deck (5 days old)"

Another favorite skate quote (usually heard from the mouths of jappy
bu-girls looking to get a laught (or a lay)): "Aren't you a little old to
be *playing* with one of those things?"

Or: "How about a ride on your skateboard big boy?"

Lyrics from "I'm not a Loser" keep popping into my head. Dunno.

later.

P.S. *NOT* listening to the Descendents really loud cuz Ronbo's got my
tape. Asshole. Why did I let him borrow it today?

but you are a loser, j! be proud...

i'm still a virtual newcomer to the world of skating. i started last
october. i've improved greatly since then. no longer a menace
to pedestrians, i prefer to damage myself while skating.

my worst fall occurred about a month and half ago on commonwealth ave
in boston (home of boston u.). i was flying down the street trying to
catch the train, so i could make it to class on time.....
i was almost to the stop when i found myself eating pavement!
luckily my palms took most of the impact. does anyone have any tips
on how to remove debris from your hands after such a fall? don't worry,
it's all come out since then. now what do you suppose caused this
unfortunate mishap. nothing but a seemingly harmless plastic syrup cap!
needless to say, i was late for class....

i've gotten the same lines from various non-skaters:
aren't you a little old to be playing around with skate boards?

well, i think i did start skating a bit late. coordination isn't easy
to come by these days. i'm almost 21! but that's beside the point...
just reply: YOU SUCK!!!!!
that shuts some up....others want to fight....oh well.

ah yes, the dreaded gravel palms! when i first started i used
to get that often, but now i ride ramps more often than not
so i tend to get more ramp burn than anything else (splinters!)
a semi-preventative to gravel palms is to ride reeeallly soft
wheels (88A powell 3's). this will allow you to roll over mosr
debris in the road. slow tho.

Nothing compared to the damage I did to myself trying to land 5 foot
no-comply kickflips over patches of grass at the BU beach today. Look for
fresh scabs tomorrow in b19 Ron.

Don't forget running into 'becca. She did also recieve a bit of a bump if
I remember correcty. :-) (unbiased comment here)

P.S. Anyone out there manage to get no-comply kickflips wired? When I do
'em (if I can manage one), the board flips clockwise (I am regular foot).
This seems to be backward of how everyone else does 'em. True or false.
Lemme know.

later.

i dunno, no complies are pretty neat, but the shin bangage makes em not
fun to do alot. unless of course you got em wired. i can barely do no
complies over square curbs, i can't do em off flat ground (seen it done
though). i've seen kickflip no complies done by doing a no comply, then
in the air bringing the toe of the front foot under the board (looks like
your about to step back on, but mess up) flipping the board, then landing.
this is all done going straight, not doing a 180. weird looking to say
the least.

Well, yeah, I am a big fan of flipping boards any which way they
can be turned. So, I started specialising in things like that. There's
really no way to explain how to actually DO it in writing without
pics to go along with it, but I know what you mean by the way the
board feels wrong, try reversing the way you kick the deck.
Anyhow, I'm outta here, midnight run.

While soft wheels are good Powell 3's have been known to give out during
crucial situations. A couple of years ago all my friends rode those things
and they all ended up tearing the wheels off the bearings. Get wheels with
cores (kryptos are good) if you use soft durometers.

The best way to keep gravel/glass/splinters/dog shit out of your hands is to
not get it in there in the first place. This can be accomplished by rolling
out of your falls. Right before you eat shit start rotating. When you hit
keep rolling. This will distribute the impact all over your body so one area
doesn't get the full force of the slam. This is an old trick but it works.

of course, you can just not fall in the first place =:-)
seriously, i don't think i've ever used the tuck and roll tekneek
intentionally. usually i just get slammed on my hip, or i do a
knee slide. (with knee pads, silly =:-) or the 'ole stomach slide...
ooofff.
i skate ramps mostly, and on minis i find sometimes i don't have enuff
time to 'slide so i just beef, but on larger ones, i can usually tell
when to bail so as not to flail.

I can tell you this funny story:

One day I was in my backyard sessioning my now defunct ramp. After I was about
done I took off my pads and was gonna go inside when I got the urge just to
cruise for a while. So I got on the flat and started to fakie. I didn't think
I needed my pads because I was just doing fakies. Then, sure enough, I started
to sketch and I bailed. I went right into a knee slide. I was about an inch
away from touchdown when I realized "Aw shit, I'm not wearing pads." My
knees hit and I came to a dead stop and my momentum carried me right down on
my face. Not good at the time but pretty funny now that I think about it.

True; on a mini you can't react because you don't have as much time. I usually
try to run it out. I don't really skate ramps any more. Right now I try to
skate "natural stuff" if I get a chance to skate at all. My skating would be
considered lame by many.

So would mine, but I enjoy myself so what the *** hey?!!!!!

I am ginger on ramps and manage r'n'rs, slides, fakies, and not much more.

Similarly, I'm well sketchy on ollies, but we have some lovely banks where
you don't need them. Grind and slob out man.
