Ileana Ros-Lehtinen: Scientology's Congresswoman

In my opinion, she is the biggest Scientology political whore on the
face of the Earth. I have never seen this many campaign donations from
Scientologists to a political campaign in recent history, nor have I seen
such obvious quid pro quo in return for these donations.
She is effusively praised by Scientology in a recent issue of International
Scientology news.
From International Scientology News 25, August 2003:
That's not all. She has now drafted a bill to be introduced into the
United States Congress known as the "Trans-Atlantic Religious
Protection Act." This will penalize European governments that
discriminate against US-based institutions and companies and give real
teeth to the United States' commitment to religious freedom across
Europe. In Germany itself, we had key breakthroughs, such as an
important lawsuit won when the Federal Labor Court fully recognized
our religious nature and ruled that Church staff "are seeking
idealistic purposes and spiritual perfection through the teachings of
Scientology." And with that, they threw out the lawsuit.

This serves me right for taking a Scientology news release seriously. While
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen certainly did introduce such a bill, it was not in 2003. It
was not even in 2002. It was in 2001, and the last major event was that it was
referred to the Subcommittee on Immigration and Claims, where it died a silent
death.
There is no such bill before Congress, as examining the record will clearly
show. The only bills touching on both religious and international issues at
present are fairly tame concurrent resolutions, condemnations of stoning people
and the like.

It appears to be based on the rather bizarre conclusion that we should "promote
greater cooperation" with our allies by abusing and harassing them for enforcing
criminal and civil laws if the malefactor is an American cult, or as the bill
itself says, "the imposition of punitive measures with respect to entities that
discriminate against individuals or groups on the basis of religion or belief."
However, the examples of "discrimination" so often cited to support legislation
like this usually is the imposition of penalties against criminals who break the
law. Somewhat reassuringly, a bill based on these premises did not survive.

Trans-Atlantic Religious Protection Act (TARPA) of 2001 - Directs the President
and the Secretary of State to raise violations of freedom of thought,
conscience, religion, or belief at every level (including at international
meetings) with representatives of European countries that have failed to
implement their international commitments and obligations with respect to such
freedoms.
Directs the Secretary of State to: (1) promote educational and cultural
workshops and forums among academies, religious leaders, and human rights
organizations in the United States and in Europe in an effort to promote a
better understanding of religious and philosophical diversity and a tolerant
society; (2) train U.S. human rights monitors stationed at European posts to
identify, investigate, and monitor persecution and discrimination on the basis
of religion or belief; and (3) issue travel advisories on countries which
discriminate on the basis of religion or belief advising Americans of potential
dangers faced by individuals who are members of targeted groups. Authorizes the
Secretary of State not to issue a visa to, and requires the Attorney General to
exclude from the United States, any alien who is a high-ranking official of a
government which is in violation of international obligations to guarantee such
freedoms.
Directs the U.S. Trade Representative to impose certain trade sanctions against
European countries that engage in or tolerate violations of religious freedom.
Directs the Secretary of Commerce to incorporate into International Trade
Administration programs guidelines and warnings regarding discriminatory
practices of European countries against U.S. products or businesses on the basis
of religion.
