Description of the Scientology Religion

The US Navy Department has this to say about Scientology:

The Scientology religion deals with the human spirit and its
relationship to the universe and its Creator. It teaches that its
fundamental laws of life, when applied, help people achieve a happier
and more fulfilling existence as surely as an apple falls to the ground
when dropped.

Tigs,

My step-Dad's part ended with this particular project, although he
continues on with other military related issues, he just hates that
Hubs lied so much about his military career...and he's not happy about
other Scn goons... anyway...we thought others here were doing the FOIA
request thingee....

As I stated I don't think we can have the Navy say they aren't a
religion....

Some people may see it differently...

I don't know....

He's a retired Lt. Colonel and the folks he talked to gave him due
respect in that regard. Looks like Mary or Out of the Dark was taking
care of this and got more attention...perhaps she can pipe in with her
results?

Hey....maybe I can get a plug in here...sorry to the EU folks and
others....but this is so cool!!!!

There is a new Marine Museum opening at Quantico Nov. 10-11-12.... just
got our copy of the opening ceremony brochure...we are on Page 200. :-)

Dang....they put us right next to the RNC.... my God!

:-)

Tigger,

I am glad you mentoned the change but I assure you that this is just
one of what will probably be numerous attempts at preparing for damage
control while the matter is being investigated by the Dept of Navy.

I did not know that the content source named at the bottom of the page
is a scientologist. Al Buttnor is a 'minister' of scientology and the
Religious Intolerance group he represents is run out of Canada. He may
well be updating the page himself for the navy chaplain web site. Both
the information and possibility are disturbing.

I did not know of this affiliation when I filed a Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA) Request in September 2006 to obtain all
information, correspondence, memos etc related to this page.I am asking
for all documents related to the chain of command of the authority and
procedures that were taken to approve such information on a government
web page that is intended to inform Navy personnel and the public about
resources available.

I had some brief email correspondence and phone communications with the
office in charge and the office who oversees the request and last I
heard was that it was being processed. I asked for alot so I wanted to
allow them some time, but I will call and contact the people I was
dealing with, to follow up on what is being done on it today.

If I do not hear back from someone today, I will file a formal FOIA
STATUS REQUEST FORM tomorrow.

I have an unnamed contact who knows a few people in the Navy's higher-ups (a
few admirals actually), and I've passed this on to him.

It's nice to see you really coming out of the dark and I mean this in
the best possible way.

There's no time like the present. Go ahead and file it no reason to
wait.

The US Navy Department page is an exact copy of a page on the
www.religioustolerance.org website. It even copies the internal links,
which of course don't work. The credits are:

Essay copyright © 1997 to 2006 by Ontario Consultants on Religious
Tolerance
Latest update: 2006-AUG-26
Author: B.A. Robinson and Al Buttnor

This used to be a copy of an earlier page, the Religious Tolerance pages
on Scientology have been updated and presumably the Navy was sent the
updated page. The website was not originally under any Scientology
influence, indeed the cult went as far as to put up a fake look alike
website (www.religioustolerance.com or similar) to divert Search
Engines.

The Religious Tolerance pages on Scientology are presently straight cult
propaganda, mostly written by Mr Buttnor. All mention of controversy
about Scientology has been removed aside from attacks on copyright
violators. There is no indication that Mr Buttnor is a senior CoS
official on the website that I can find. We know him well, he was one of
the chief opponents of the Toronto picketing group when it was active.

The Religious Tolerance website has a clear and firm agenda, maintaining
that aside from a few doomsday suicide groups all religious groups are
benign and that the 'anti-cult movement' has been discredited. It is
neither balanced nor NPOV, and should be actively not recommended.

Obviously the US Navy should not be hosting material provided by the
cult itself as its only information about Scientology, particularly as
it contains controversial data. It is entirely likely that whoever
accepted the update didn't compare it with the old page and notice how
much it had changed.

Best of luck with your investigation!

My lack of knowledge of both Scn and websites is surely lacking here,
but if Mary should like to use my step-Dad's help in any way, please
feel free to contact us (either in the group or by email) to let me
know what he can do. I'm not clear on what needs to be done to help
improve the problem or what result you are looking for exactly.

Mary, if you like you can email someone else that you trust completely
and have them pass on the information to me too. My step-Dad is more
than willing to help with this.

Thanks.

There is?! And they're opening on the Corps' birthday, too!

When I'm in San Francisco, I like to stay at the Marine Corps hotel
there - I can see my dad and godfather's names
on plaques there, and they have a great bar on the top floor with good
happy hour food and a great view of the city.

Have a good time at Quantico! I bet the silent drill team will
perform...
