After half a day playing with "fstab" I am miffed at the inability of
the latest release to mount and read any DVD - No trouble reading the
same DVD's with Windows using the same hardware. Any entries about the
DVD burner are removed automagically from "fstab" on reboot, so there
are no entries there. Any help would be appreciated.

This is my syslog

Thanks Paul. I plugged in the 80 channel ribbon cable after removing the
old 40 connector and everything now works like a charm. Wow, who would
have thought that this was the problem. Even burning with Windows was
painful before, now its a dream. Slowly working through problems with
the latest Mandriva release - another one down.
Thanks again.

Just so the complete solution is available in the thread ...

The above forum article links to ...
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12092

The problem is in the libata module determining what speed to use in
communications with the dvd. It incorrectly detects a 40 pin, 40 wire
ide cable as a 40 pin, 80 wire, cable. The 80 wire cable is needed for
speeds over UDMA/33.

The fix is to either replace the 40 wire cable with an 80 wire cable, or
to add a line to /etc/modprobe.conf with ...
options pata_sis libata.force=2:udma33

which will force the speed to be limited to udma33.

Regards, Dave Hodgins
