And John Phillip Law.

The list is obviously put together by complete idiots.

The list is not meant to be all-inclusive but it is put together with
an eye toward Academy membership and/or former
winners and nominees. Hence Claude Berri (who won an Oscar for a short
film) and not Eartha Kitt, who really did not have '
much of a film career. Harvey Korman and George Carlin did appear in
several films but they weren't Academy members
and were perhaps better known as television performers. Heath Ledger
wasn't included in the Emmy reel because despite
appearing in the short-lived "Roar", he was mostly known as a TV
star.

The Academy is a club and it treats its In Memoriam as such -- a
tribute to its members.
Screen Actors Guild functions as a union and includes a very large
membership, thus, it's listing may seem more "complete."

Not necessarily. For instance, Oscar nominee Dorothy McGuire was
omitted the year Aaliyah was included.

I thought it was poorly done. How do you include vampire lady (her
name escapes me at the moment) and leave out Eartha. Makes no sense.

Excuse me, but "Roar" *was* a television series and so was much of his
work until he moved into film.

If exclusivity is the name of the game then "The Academy" should
broadcast its increasingly boring awards to its club members and not
to the film going public.

However, since "The Academy" appears to court the public's attention -
if not its approval and support by broadcasting and promoting the
Oscars ad nauseam - then perhaps it should lift its self-indulgent
game to include in the "In Memoriam" those people whom the public
admire, remember and wish to see honoured in the tribute.

I repeat ... the people who compile this list are idiots.

She should have been there. She was in a picture that got the 1930 award.
"Broadway Melody" (1929). I wonder if it'd helped if she'd been nominated
like her co-star Bessie Love or the director William Beaumont, though they
didn't win.

IMO, it was a very good idea....she sang "I'll Be Seeing You". It was
a nice distraction from the visual mess of the clips.

I got through the first six minutes of the Oscars last night, but then
turned it over to a marathon of NCIS on the USA Network.

The Oscars lost me when they started showing highlights of "Space
Chimps" during a salute to animation....

Yeah, that was silly.

The only really obvious miss on the In Memoriam list was Mel Ferrer.
OK, maybe George Carlin. And they included a publicist on the list
instead of one of them? Geesh!

I generally enjoyed the show and who won what. I would like to have
seen a little more of Hugh Jackman, and thought the presentations to
the actors went on a bit long.

The singing -- good idea. Not showing the memorial film full screen
for TV viewers -- bad idea. I couldn't even read the names of some of
those listed. I wanted to see the memorial clip, not Latifah singing
in front of it, and not the clip reflected back up from the shiny
floor. Shoot the director who planned that and memorialize him next
year.

I ran a much smaller awards ceremony than the Oscars last summer (the
Hugo Awards) and stole the notion of background music during our In
Memoriam from The Oscars (particularly the year Yo-Yo Ma played).
When you use background music like that, you want the visuals to stand
out. For this year's Oscars, the cameras focused too long on Latifah
and completely screwed up for another 30 seconds or so focusing on the
in memoriam clips. This isn't brain surgery.

RESPONSE:
Well, that publicist was one of the biggest people in the movie business. I
realize that people outside the movie business don't care, but when one
considers that the Academy itself is the promotional arm of the industry, it
doesn't seem surprising that someone who was for many years THE powerhouse
figure in an area that has its own branch in the Academy would be included.
Especially if, as I seem to recall, he was a former member of the Board of
Governors. (Warren Cowan is who is under discussion here.)
