Bernard A. Bennick Army Colonel
Bernard A. Bennick, 88, a retired Army colonel who specialized in personnel
management and administrative assignments, died of respiratory failure Dec.
18 [2009] at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He was a Dumfries resident.
Col. Bennick joined the Army in 1940 and saw combat in North Africa during
World War II. His final active-duty assignment, in 1970, was at the Pentagon
as director of the separation and retired affairs division.
Since 1987, he had worked for a family business, Ateeco of Shenandoah, Pa.,
makers of Mrs. T's pierogies. He marketed the food to military commissaries.
Bernard Anthony Benick was born in Turkey Run, Pa. He added the "n" in his
surname to avoid confusion with someone of the same name and rank in the
military, his family said.
He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and other
military schools. His decorations included two awards of the Legion of
Merit, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
His wife of 37 years, Margaret Neidinger Bennick, died in 1981.
Survivors include three children, Louise M. Eskay of Rockville, Patricia A.
Bennick of Dumfries and Bernard Bennick Jr. of Springfield; two brothers;
five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
