The pilot, and team leader for the GEICO Skytypers, was killed in a plane
crash in Virginia Friday. The GEICO Skytypers were scheduled to appear at
the State Of Maine Airshow next weekend.
Officials have identified the pilot as Jan Wildbergh. He trained with the
Dutch Air Force where he flew first generation jet fighters during the Cold
War. He moved to the U.S. to pilot private aircraft, ran a flight school and
joined Skytypers in 1986.
Skytypers is a squadron of six planes that perform at air shows throughout
North America. Their appearance next weekend in Maine would be their first
at the annual show in Brunswick. The Skytypers perform low altitude,
precision formation flying demonstrations.
The squadron also delivers aerial messaging known as "skytyping" for its
sponsors.
The air show in Virginia Beach is set to begin later today.
The annual, three-day show, sponsored by the Navy, draws about 250,000
people. Performers this year include the Blue Angels, the Navy's precision
flying team.
