Ethel Funches Cafeteria Manager, Golfer

Ethel Funches, 96, who retired as cafeteria manager at Dunbar High School in
the District and was a leading golfer on the black women's golfing circuit,
died Jan. 6 [2010] at Specialty Hospital's nursing home in the District. She
had cardiovascular disease.

Mrs. Funches, a District resident, worked at Dunbar for much of her career
and retired about 1970.

She was a member of Wake Robin Golf Club in the District, one of the first
golf clubs in the country for black women. She won numerous golf tournaments
at the club and won regional and national events. She was inducted into a
national hall of fame for black golfers.

Ethel Powers was born in South Carolina and moved to the Washington area as
a young woman.

Her husband, Eugene Funches, died in 1996.

She has no immediate survivors.
