A Wilmington woman who was beaten and left brain-dead by her
ex-boyfriend Sunday night died Monday of her injuries, police said.
Wilmington police did not release any information on the death of
37-year-old Simone Robinson until Wednesday, more than a day after she died.
Her ex-boyfriend, Gregory Q. Griffin Jr., 31, of Bear, who initially was
facing charges of attempted murder and endangering the welfare of a
child, was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in the slaying that
occurred about 7:50 p.m. in the area of 25th and Thatcher streets.
According to court records, Griffin and Robinson were the parents of two
children he was returning to her Sunday night.
Griffin pulled up in his red four-door car at their agreed meeting
place, got the two children and a stroller out and told Robinson's older
son to walk the children away because he had to speak to their mother,
police said in court records.
Moments later, the son heard his mother scream and ran back to find
Griffin and her in a physical altercation, according to court records.
The son saw Griffin tackle his mother and bash her head repeatedly into
the sidewalk, police said in court records.
Griffin then stopped assaulting her, walked to his car and drove off,
police said.
Another witness confirmed the son's story.
When his mother was found, she was unconscious on the sidewalk with
severe head injuries.
Robinson was treated on the scene by county paramedics and rushed to
Christiana Hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition to the
intensive care unit.
She died 18 hours later at 1:56 p.m. Monday due to "multiple skull
fractures, bleeding and swelling of the brain and other injuries
received in the assault," according to court records.
Griffin fled the state following the assault to a relative's Elkton,
Md., area home, where he was arrested on a warrant Monday charging him
with attempted murder.
He was held as a fugitive in Maryland until Tuesday when he waived
extradition and was returned to Delaware to face murder charges.
