Karl Wipplinger Physician, Faculty Member
Karl Wipplinger, 81, a past director of internal medicine at George 
Washington University's medical school, died of congestive heart failure 
Feb. 17 [2010] at his home in Alexandria.
Dr. Wipplinger served on the GWU medical faculty for 45 years. He retired 
from clinical practice in 1994 but continued teaching until 2002. He was a 
multiple recipient of the school's outstanding teaching award.
Dr. Wipplinger was born in Steyr, Austria. He received his medical degree 
from the University of Vienna's medical school in 1953 and trained in 
internal medicine at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Linz, Austria. He completed 
his residency at GWU and then joined the faculty. He ran the staff's morning 
report conferences for more than 30 years.
He enjoyed playing bridge.
His marriage to Barbara Callahan ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Wipplinger of Alexandria.
