Captain Sir Thomas Erasmus Barlow, 3rd Baronet, DSC, DL, died at
Highgate, 12 October, 2003. He was aged 89.

He was born 23 January, 1914, son of Sir (James) Alan Noel Barlow, 2nd
Baronet (1881-1968), by his wife, Emma Nora Darwin, daughter of Sir
Horace Darwin, KBE, FRS, fifth son of the great Charles Darwin, of
"Origin of Species" &c.

The 2nd Baronet was Principal Private Secretary to the Prime Minister,
James Ramsay MacDonald, 1933-34, and later Under Secretary at the
Treasury.

Thomas Barlow was educated Winchester.

Career: entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet in 1932; qualified
submarines, 1937; served in Submarines in the Atlantic, Mediterranean,
Indian Ocean and Far East during World War II; Naval Staff Course,
1946; Joint Services Staff Course, 1947; Commander, 1950; British
Joint Services Mission, Washington, 1950-53; Captain, Royal Navy,
1954; Imperial Defence College, 1957; Chief Staff Officer to the Flag
Officer Submarines, 1960-62; Commodore, HMS Drake, Devonport, 1962-64;
retired from the Royal Navy, 1964; &c.

Sir Thomas was actively concerned in Wildlife and Countryside
Conservation: Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife
Trust; Galapogos Conservation Trust, &c.

He succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father, 28 February,
1968; appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for the county of Buckinghamshire,
1977. He received a Hon DLitt from Sussex, 1997.

Sir Thomas, who lived at Highgate, London, married 9 July, 1955,
Isabel, the youngest daughter of Thomas Munn Body, MRCS, LRCP, DL, JP,
of Marton-in-Cleveland, near Middlesbrough.

The marriage produced two sons and two daughters. The baronetcy now
passes to the elder son, James, who was born 10 July, 1956.

The funeral takes place at St Marylebone Crematorium, 21 October,
2003.
