Urrgh...Wikipedia already lists him as "Native American actors"! Any
Wikipedians here want to edit that?
Well I'm downright excited about the casting. Now I can get back to my
screenplay: "Oedipus Rez - Save It For Your Horse"
That tag is not given for any *role* one may play: "Depp has German,
Cherokee (mostly from a great-grandmother), and Irish ancestry."
Of course, since he's not enrolled in a federally registered tribe,
Betsy Ashby must now Totally Annihilate him, right? Right? At last
a task suitable to her inflated budget and pecs! Go get Johnny Depp!
Faux Indian in Wikipedia! Faux Indian on screen! Go get him! Rawwwr!
Or... what? Helpless 70-year-old widows were more your speed, Betsy?
Except that nobody would suggest me to play Henry V. And I'm a bit
sick of actors "discovering" Indian ancestors as they play Indians.
Even though I'm sure millions of Twitards think you can do just
that.
You might learn something new about your character's family. (In
fact, if George Lucas was involved, I guarantee you will, judging
by his two most well-known franchises.) But I've never heard about
doing it for your character. Is Depp or Lautner Indian from a
certain point of view?
Hope that helps.

That's the oldest Wikipedia page on Depp I could find, from 2005.
It has the same "German, Cherokee, Irish ancestry" claim, from long
before the current "Tonto" furore. So it's no recent "discovery".
