I was thinking of posting how great Birmingham was, and go into depth.
But words cannot do it justice. Incredible. Absolutely fantastic. What a
band, what a show, the energy, the fans, the atmosphere. Im in such a
state of euphoria that I cannot construct sentences of any real meaning.

Everything was so much better than Wembley Arena on the 9th. there were
no clicks in the sound, the atmosphere was electric and more intense
than Wembley on the 9th.

Even the blow up doll had a good time.

Did you see Geddy's double take when it arrived front row centre and he
noticed it? How Alex missed it during his rant was a mystery!

This show was in a different league to the Wembley show. Which just
confirms what a shithole Wembley is. The sound was far and away better,
the traffic was better, the venue is better, the beer is cheaper. No
contest. Sound was spot on for the first half, but there were one or two
glitches I noticed second half, mainly seemed to my ears to be Alex's
guitar on some of the more "technical" songs like RSA and MR, but the
guys on the mixing desk seemed to get a handle back on it soon enough.
Really wish I'd got a ticket for the show tomorrow, the Wembley show was
more like a warm up for these ones. The guys seemed more animated and
Neil was on fire. . seemed to be lots more little flourishes tonight in
his playing, was very noticeable that his drum kit seemed to have pissed
him off at some point in the day and tonight he taught it a lesson it
won't soon forget! The drum solo was noticeably different to Wednesday's
as well - most of the same elements, just mixed differently, a bit more
fluid and loose I'd say.

Could really do without RTB - I used this opportunity to hit the heads
and merchandising. RTB needs to go. Bring back TAK! BTW was sublime
tonight, Alex's solo was just amazing. LVS was probably the best
rendition I've ever heard live (Alex's rant was about the Boddington's
plant closing down because everyone drinks lager these days and HE WANTS
HIS BODDINGTONS! Ended with "Oh well, it's only beer" or somesuch)

Nice touch was during The Temples Of Syrinx when Geddy sang the pirates
line someone in the crowd was flying a huge jolly roger and one of the
cameras focussed on it for a while and it was projected behind the boys.
. worked really well (aaarrrggghhhhh).

Basically, everything that was shit about Wembley was just about perfect
tonight. Hooked up with BaldiePete for a couple beers before the show
too. Fun was had by all!

I've been wondering about Boddington's - I noticed here in our local
supermarket that there was a 6-pack of something called Boddington's Pub
Ale - is this good stuff? Being imported, it was on the pricey end of the
available beers. But I'd be willing to try it if it's an authentic Brit
thing - unlike that crap Foster's that the Aussies have been sending over
and calling it "Australian for beer". I'm all about the trying new things.
But I don't like to be tricked. I've only really been exposed to American
versions of beer and I want to see what all the fuss is about in regards to
Brit brews. Heck, I'm told even the Guinness we get here is a pale, watered
down version of the real thing (Thanks a lot, republicans! ;-) )

So is there much chance that the Boddington's I see here is for realsies?

I love me some Killian's Irish Red. But again, I know that's just an
American beer packaged in a Irishy looking bottle. I see people downing
pints on imported British TV shows and just looks like much more fun than
our pale USA beer. I can't even drink Bud or regular Coors. Miller would
do in a pinch. The fake Lowenbrau we get is good with pizza.

I really want to be more educated beer drinker but I just don't have the
opportunity here. I might have to go to Europe/UK just to find out.

AH - it WAS Boddingtons was it? Surprised he knows what it IS!

Heh - that would've been the one held up by the guy sat in the
cordoned-off mixing desk/lighting desk area then (i.e. not someone in
the crowd, but someone doing the show)... ;-)

It's just a matter of differing tastes.

I swear I saw Alex notice it and chuckle to himself, I swear I noticed a
faint smile, but I guess he just had to be professional and carry on
playing.

I can't remember what the freaking song was, but I noticed Alex tapped a
pedal on his, I dunno, pedal board or something, and then he had no
guitar sound, quickly tapped another pedal, and it all came back.

I was in a great position in Block 4 to see Geddy triggering "Attention
all planets of the solar federation..." and Alex frantically tapping
pedals - it seems to be getting a bit much for him now.

Ahh. . belay that comment #1, I was in error. Looked good though, and
don't remember it at Wemberley on Wed. (I'm trying to filter out every
single thing about Wembley other than the fact that Rush were playing!)

Hello folks,

I haven't posted in here in ages (years probably). I was at the NEC last
night, Rush were on fire for sure. There were a couple of low points in the
set for me - the Yardbirds cover as an acoustic version didn't work for me
(and a lot of other people judging by the number who sat down and started
having a chat) and Mystic Rhythms took the pace out of the show for me.
Just different tastes I guess...everything else was pretty good, wtih a few
songs thrown in that I wasn't really expecting to see performed.

Watching the guys play again after so long was amazing - they had so much
energy! I also enjoyed the backscreen projections, the dragon is a bit of a
riot! All good stuff really, my ears are still ringing...The band were so
tight, hardly a missed beat anywhere. And I've never been to a concert
where the band plays for 3 hours and 10 minutes (not including the 20 minute
break). Definitely worth the ticket price! I'm really glad I went, I'd
have been gutted to have missed it, even though...

...the sound - not brilliant in some parts of the mix. The drums were muddy
for the first 20 minutes or so, but then they got sorted out and were
spot-on (really crisp) for the rest of the show. Alex's guitars were great,
some fantastic sounds out of those. Geddy's Taurus pedals were great - as
long as it was bass sounds which were really rich and full. The other
non-bass sounds out of those were barely audible in the mix. That brings me
on to the bass - as a bass player of almost 25 years myself, I can speak on
this subject with at least a little authority. Geddy - ditch the Jazz bass,
it doesn't work. I remember going to Signals at the NEC and seeing him use
that same Fender Jazz during The Weapon - it was indistinct and inaudible
then! For the bass lines Geddy plays, it has nowhere near enough attack and
doesn't cut through the drums and the guitar. Either that or the sound man
doesn't like bass players. The volume was, mostly, loud. I wasn't the only
one to comment, but the volume was variable during some songs, where the
volume would reduce, or increase - almost like a wash effect was going on.
I'm not blaming the band for any of the failings in the sound of course, but
at The Who almost three years ago, the mix was amazing (and they WERE
loud) - you could have heard someone cough halfway through the most raucous
of songs and the quality was pin-sharp. So it's not the venue is it?

All-in-all, a pretty special night out if I put the faults in the sound to
one side. A great atmosphere in the whole place, watching a very special
band. I just hope this isn't the last time we all get to see these guys
play!

Roger

And to the people in Block 14, Row F, seats 110 to about 114 - just how many
times did you fucking guys expect the stewards to ask you not to block the
walkway????

I don't recall it at all from Wednesday, saw it on the screen on Thurs
but didn't know it was from the mixing desk. :-)

i think your second presumption is probably the more correct one.
that was also the same bass that was used to record moving pictures,
of course, and that is certainly not suffering from those same
shortcomings you listed. i haven't noticed the faults you've mentioned
live either, although i do sense a certain sterility in his live sound that
i think is more due to the fact that he is not using a stage amp
system live anymore.
