Yesterday, I went to see Peter Weir's MASTER AND COMMANDER at my local
Loews googleplex. The film I highly reccomend: an actual modern
swashbuckler with a realistic edge to it.

Sitting through the trailers, the new preview for CAT IN THE HAT comes
on. As much as I think I will despise this movie, something caught my
eye during the trailer. I wasn't sure if it was what I thought it was
at first, so after the movie, I went out to the lobby, where I caught
the trailer again on one of the bajillion plasma screens they have
playing trailers, interviews, etc.

It was what I thought I saw. The Opera House set from PHANTOM OF THE
OPERA is indeed in the film. There's a breif shot of the main
characters twirling down a sliding pole in what seems to be the Opera
rennovated into a nightclub. It's nice to see the set is still being
used, but you would think they'd at least use it as a legitimate
theater in a film.

Your right. It is the Phantom of the Opera set. They had an employee
screening last week, and the movie is actually quite good. I picked up on
that brief scene, knew instantly where they shot it at! Quick eyes will also
see a brief flash of Dolly Parton's home from the film Best Little Whorehouse
In Texas in the background of one scene.

After having suffered through THE GRINCH, the worst movie... no, make
that the worst ANYTHING... I've seen in years, I have no inclination
to check out the Cat or his Hat. And that is that.

You'd think they would have learned their lesson after THE GRINCH ... and
SEUSICAL .... and THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DOCTOR T (which I lilke for all the
wrong reasons.)

As sure as death and taxes - Dr. Seuss does NOT work as live action.

The Phantom set has been in a lot of movies over the years. In a related
matter the ship used in Master and Commander is The Rose, which was built in
Nova Scotia about 10 years ago. It's a faithful (as faithful as possible and
still legal on the 21st century ocean) reproduction of a late 18th century
frigate. Just before it went off to be a movie star it was among the Tall
Ships visiting NYC in 2000. Here's the website:

Please correct me if I am wrong. I thought that the only thing "Dr. Seuss" had
to do with the "500 Fingers" movie is set design.

You are wrong by at least a factor 10! It's 5000 Fingers. Geisel (Seuss) worked
on the screenplay and the lyrics as well as being involved with set design and
overall conception. He was intimately involved with the whole production.
