The restored version of Hot Water that intercuts the three stories a
la Intolerance is a fascinating experiment-- the intercutting at the
end shows how clearly Lloyd was influenced by Pudovkin's montage
theories at that point. And while I know some folks will likely carp
about the Club Foot Orchestra scores, the fact that you have the
classic Time-Life scores on the alternate track gives us all the best
of both worlds.
In related news, my London After Midnight site is back up by popular
demand (defined as "at least one demand") just in time for this very
auspicious date. If you've seen it before, nothing new, but if you
haven't, find proof of the LAM Coverup perpetrated by so-called
"Chaneyfans" and others "film preservation associates" with their
vested interests in hiding the truth here:
>I just got this and have barely had a chance to do more than check
>print quality, but it looks awesome! The silent version of Welcome
>Danger is truly a discovery-- okay, maybe not quite as good as The
>Freshman or The Kid Brother, but to even have a "new" silent comedy
>classic on a par with, say, Speedy is a wonderful thing.
>
But why don't you mention that safety last is now colorized in
flourescent orange to enhance the "safety" theme?
Oh well - back to restoring my copy of "A Daughter of the Gods".
Anybody got any extra book tape?

What turned out to be a loss for Chaplin fans is a true gain for Lloyd
fans, since it turns out that the film features--not Chaplin--but
Lloyd doing a Chaplin impersonation opposite Mabel Normand, apparently
moonlighting at Keystone 6 months earlier than previously believed
(and imitating Chaplin even earlier than the Willie Work and Lonesome
Luke films). I have to admit though, that the kicking the baby in the
face gag made me a bit queasy and took the Chaplin imitation a bit too
far.

Oh come on, that isn't nearly as good as Hats Off or Girl in the Limousine.
Can't wait to get around to seeing Heart Trouble After Midnight.

You are evil, and I've missed your presence here.
