Many thanks, Jon, for posting this list. I appreciate the research you must
have had to do to come up with it.
I take it, then, that the number one title on my Paramount "wants list" is a
dead duck? I refer to the Nancy Carroll-Jack Holt feature "The Water Hole"
(1928).
Anyway, your list of extant titles gives hope to those of us who have
yearned for years to see some of these films, and who now have at least a
glimmer of hope that during our lifetimes, we may be able to view some of
them.
Thanks again

Bosworth, Inc. was one of the founding members of Paramount Pictures--so the
Bosworth pictures definitely qualify as Paramounts. The Oiliver Morosco Photoplay
Co. was also part of Bosworth, Inc. (which was financed by Frank Garbutt) so
Morosco pictures are Paramounts. After Hobart Bosworth left Bosworth, Inc. in 1915
the company maintained its corporate identity as Bosworth, Inc. but released its
films under the Morosco and Pallas brands (so Pallas Pictures are also
Paramounts). In 1916, after the merger of Famous Players and Lasky, the Famous
Players-Lasky Corporation bought the interests of Bosworth, Inc. from Frank Garbutt
and Garbutt became a Paramount executive. Then FP-L absorbed Paramount Pictures,
the distributing company, but maintained the FP-L corporate name until 1927 when
the name was changed to Paramount-Famous-Lasky Corporation.
All of this is a long-winded way of saying that The Sea Lion (1921) is
neither a Bosworth, Inc. production nor a Paramount Picture.

Great! Adolphe Menjou wrote in his autobiography that this was his
favorite of his Paramount films.

YES. Your hard work & research are greatly appreciated.

Any ideal who has THE HEART RAIDER (23)? That's been high on my list for
years.
Thanks again!

CRAZY TO MARRY is at Gosfilmofond in Moscow. GASOLINE GUS is at the Czech Film
Archive.
George Eastman House has it, but I don't know if it is 16mm or 35mm.
This is at MOMA. I don't know if it is complete.
> Beyond the Rocks 22
This survives only as a fragment in the Nederlands Filmuseum.
> Grand Duchess and the Waiter, The 26
This is actually quite common and a number of folks in this group probably have
16mm prints, although I believe it survives only as a Kodascope version. (Earl
might comment on what material LOC has.) It's a charming picture, but not
great IMO.
That's my point. OK, in the interest of fairness, I amend my earlier list to
include the following additional extant "Paramount" titles:
OLIVER MOROSCO PRODUCTIONS: (note, all but 4 of these are incomplete)
Code of Marcia Gray 16
Happiness of Three Women, The 17
Her Father's Son 16
His Sweetheart 17
House of Lies, The 16
International Marriage, An 16
Jane 15
Kilmeny 15
Madame La Presidente 16
Making of Maddalena, The 16
Marcellini Millions, The 17
Out of the Wreck 17
Pasquale 16
Peer Gynt 15
Redeeming Love 16
Road to Love, The 16
Stronger Love, The 16
Tom Sawyer 17
Tongues of Men, The 16
Yankee Girl, The 15
PALLAS PRODUCTIONS (note: *all* are incomplete)
Ben Blair 16
Bond Between, The 17
Call of the Cumberlands, The 16
Gentleman from Indiana, The 15
Heart of Paula, The 16
Heir of the Ages, The 17
Lonesome Chap, The 17
Son of Erin, A 16
I've posted on this before, but it's been awhile so I'll repost my standard
blurb and disclaimer on where this info comes from.
For starters, I have constructed a database of all American produced silent
features compiled from numerous sources (AFI books, Film Daily yearbooks,
copyright records, etc.) I also have databases of all pre-1950 American and
British sound films. Of these, the American 30's is pretty complete, but the
others are somewhat more spotty for archival holdings...but I digress.
Incidentally...this was built the hard way, typing in title, release year,
studio, etc. for some 25,000 or so features! I obviously did most of the grunt
work back when I was single and childless and had no life whatsoever.
For the last 17 years or so I have compared these release lists against every
archival holding I can find. These include:
---complete holdings lists of LOC, UCLA, MOMA, Eastman House, Pacific Film
Archive, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Most of these were gotten the hard
way...by going to the archive and flipping through index cards or paper
printouts.
---the nitrate donation list for LOC (this was a photocopy about 4 feet thick!)
---the FIAF silent archive listing from 1983 with American holdings of all FIAF
archives (which is pretty much all film archives in the world).
---the studio vault list for MGM (including Metro and Goldwyn releases)
---misc. archival records from a variety of sources such as the Hampton
collection at UCLA, the Everson collection at Eastman, etc.
In addition, I scrutinize lists from every film festival I can find (Cinecon,
Cinefest, Cinevent, Pordenone, BFI Theater, PFA, Stanford Theater, Film Forum,
LOC Mary Pickford Thearer, etc., etc.) looking for silents and noting the
sources. I have also been following the 16mm collector market for about 25
years taking notes on what prints collectors hold.
Through these sources I have compiled what I believe to be the most complete
archival holdings list of American silent features anywhere (and the American
30's list is pretty good too). Earl and others will probably attest to the
accuracy of this list compared with "official" archive lists.
Can I be wrong? Of course. Some things I include because someone got a
nitrate, then I learn the nitrate decomposed (drat!). Other times there are
new finds that I had no record of...although these get publicized and I then
add them to my list. Sometimes I show something as complete, but it's only a
fragment, or the converse is true. Every year I add another dozen or so titles
I didn't previously list, and I'm making corrections all the time. In fact,
every year for the past several years there has been at least one film shown at
Cinefest that I showed as "lost." Oooops.
But overall, you aren't going to find very many titles that I say are lost that
really exist. If I declare it as lost it means none of the major archives have
it, it hasn't shown at a major film festival, and no major colllector has it.
Sure, it might be in someone's attic. When they find it I'll add it to my
list!
I'm happy to respond to specific requests as to the survival and/or archival
location of certain films, and I prefer to respond publicly so everyone can
share the info. I just ask that you (a) not post lists of 50 titles as a
request and (b) don't give me something vague like "which Snitz Edwards films
exist?"
As long as you accept the limitations of the database (any list is only as
accurate as the sources consulted), you'll find it fairly useful.
Which means CRAZY TO MARRY probably has all of the gags cut out and the
print of GASOLINE GUS is all beat to hell. Still, has any American
archive gotten ahold of this material yet?
RICHARD M ROBERTS
<<'m happy to respond to specific requests as to the survival and/>>
Bebe Daniels film "The Speed Girl", which was based on Bebe's own speeding
violation which led to her stay in jail back in 1921, is this film been lost or
is it also been restored? I didn't see it on the list for Paramount extant
films

Ooops. You're absolutely right. Let's amend the list one more time:
FAMOUS PLAYERS:
Arms and the Girl 17
Behind the Scenes 14
Cinderella 14
Count of Monte Cristo, The 13
David Harum 15
Destiny's Toy 16
Eagle's Mate, The 14
Foundling, The 16
Hulda From Holland 16
Incorrigible Dukane, The 15
Love That Lives, The 17
Madame Butterfly 15
Mistress Nell 14
Moment Before, The 16
Prisoner of Zenda, The 13
Rags 15
Rolling Stones 16
Sign of the Cross, The 14
Silks and Satins 16
Snow White 16
Tess of the Storm Country 14
THE SPEED GIRL is a Realart Production so it wouldn't be on the Paramount list,
but it is also list so it wouldn't have shown up anyway.
Sorry...typing too fast. I meant to say "it is also *lost*...."
Or do we have contacts at either of these fine institutions? Bob?
