uhm, there's this new exercise in distributed computing going on where the people
who run SETI, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, are... oh heck,
here's the url:
http://www.setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu
anyway, they've now got teams, and i tried to start one a half-hour ago called
FurSETI. it hasn't shown up yet, and unfortunately we're one or two work-units
short of appearing in the top 100 "club" teams, so you'd have to search for
it by name. anyway, if you think this sort of thing is cool and you've got
your machine gnawing away on one of these packets, i'd be really flattered
if you'd join this team. thanks, furs!

Well, if the client program (win 1.0 for me) wasn't saddled with such
inadequate servers (keep timing out when sending or getting data) or
nonfunctional (winsock error 10060, although I don't know if that's
the 'timed-out' error or not), I'd be running the program now. It is,
though, so as of now it's not even installed.
That their PR needs some work as well doesn't help matters any. (I
signed up for the e-mail notice of when the client would be available,
but never got the notice before it was available to the public;
furthermore, when I submitted a bug report, I never got a reply of any
kind, even an auto-ack.)

I heard about this programme, and was interested; I'll have a look.
(Although I prefer the idea of a Search for Extra-Terrestrial Idiocy.)

We have a good speed though so hopefully we will be able to get up
there. BTW we need a web site I think.

Ah. As I've got an account now whereby I pay per MB downloaded, rather
than per hour, I'll have to pass on this.
I've been running the SETI code for around a week now and would be
more than willing to add my name to such a team...
Looking at the WWW pages, though, I haven't been able to find
information on the clubs though. Any hints?
Aeto, looking...

Click on teams on the main page. type "furseti" in the search bar,
then click on join this team.
Also you can click the following URL
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=furseti
Uh... There isn't a "teams" link on the main page... At least not on
the one I am seeing.

Ahhh... Going there, I get:
We're fixing some problems with teams; please try later.
I'll sign up as soon as I can. :>

the linux version has an odd permissions bug (or maybe it's a sysadmin
incompetence test..) that i haven't been able to fix but have managed to work
around. sorry to hear it's not working for you!

Instead of running your Distributed.net RC5 client? For shame! =)
Kit - who does, and submits it to the Userfriendly.org (UFies!) team
Goe great with my Battlestar Galactica desktop theme :-)

Well, I'd love to. I can't make the software work yet, though, because I'm
using an evaluation copy of Windows NT Server (long story) that only lets me
use 16 colors, so the thing can't run. When I have a real operating system,
though, I'll gladly join FurSETI, as I'd planned on joining the search anyhow.

You can't take the wolf out of me, but you have to take it out of my address to
reach me.
Signing up as I type. This is the best idea I've heard in weeks!!
Also, searching for Nutella... ~Vensre =^..^=
First download the software and get it running.
Second, go to the SETI site and log in with the e-mail address you gave
them.
Next click on the "If you don't know your password click here" link.
A password will be e-mailed within a few minutes
The password will be a nine digit number.

If the logon says it can't match your e-mail address, make sure you type it
in all lower case.
For some reason the logon program doesn't like CAPS.

all unices are case-sensetive.
