DENVER - Western state lawmakers praised the McCain-Palin presidential
ticket on Wednesday, and said its support of gun rights and concern for
natural resources resonates with voters in the region. That includes the
development of oil shale in Utah.
Colorado U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard and New Mexico congresswoman Heather
Wilson characterized the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden as
being against Second Amendment rights and lacking a plan for energy
independence.
They also said Obama and Biden pale in comparison to John McCain and
Sarah Palin when it comes to understanding the West's land use issues.
"Whether it is grazing, or ranching, or water - all of those are
Western issues in ways that are not in cities like Chicago," Wilson said. "I
kind of wonder whether the guy from Delaware or the guy from Chicago even
know what a grazing permit is or how to get one."
McCain and Palin have supported steps toward energy independence that
Democrats opposed, including oil shale development on federal lands in
Colorado, Wyoming and Utah, Wilson said.
As for gun rights, Allard said of the Democrats, "That's probably as
hostile a team as you can put together as far as the Second Amendment is
concerned."
McCain has voted against banning assault-type weapons but favors
requiring background checks at gun shows. He also supports shielding
gun-makers and dealers from civil suits.
Obama has voted to leave gun-makers and dealers open to suits and, as
an Illinois state lawmaker, supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons.
Allard addressed a controversy over remarks McCain made last month
when he told a Colorado newspaper that a key Western water agreement should
be "renegotiated over time." McCain's remarks about the 1922 Colorado River
Compact drew outrage from Republicans and Democrats. Democrats pounced,
saying it was a sign McCain didn't understand the importance of water
politics in the arid region.
"Talk about being out of touch with Western values," Chandler said,
referring to McCain's statements about the compact.
The compact allocates the river among the lower basin states -
Arizona, California and Nevada - and the upper basin states - Colorado, New
Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
Allard said he, too, was "shocked" when he heard about McCain's
comments. He said McCain has since clarified his stance, that he was not
calling for a renegotiation of the compact, and that the issue won't linger
in voters' minds.
LOL We really don't care, Festus. McCain will lose the ENTIRE WEST
COAST in November and will probably get Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming,
Montana and Arizona, his home state. That's a total of 30 electoral
votes. Obama will take Colorado, New Mexico, California, Oregon and
Washington for a total of 87.
I'll make that deal in a heartbeat. LOL
Who gives two shits how well he does in a state with 5 electoral votes
that he's supposed to take anyway?
Did you see Real Clear Politics had just listed Virginia and solid for
Obama? LOL There goes the Solid South for you guys! Hey, did you also
notice Florida is soft for Gramps too? Gee, what do you suppose
happens if we take that as well?
laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh.

No matter who wins, it's going to be a major challenge to reverse the
course of the Bush policies.
To Quote Gore in the 82 election - everything that's supposed to be up
is down and everything that's supposed to be down is up.
It's amazing how GW turned everything upside down. And McCain has
voted 90% in agreement with GW.
Remaind me again how there is to be any change with McCain?
It is extremely revealing to understand that people in Alaska are
actually concerned enough about it that they make Obama's candidacy a
topic of daily conversation.
You either have to be pretty damned bored, or just stinking of fear,
before you do that.
Do Festus and his friends up in Alaska actually harbor some doubt
that their state is solidly, resolutely, already won and conceded to
the Republicans?
And this is BEFORE the debates. Let McCain try his "I wouldn't run lying
ads about you if you'd come to my town hall meetings" to Obama's face and
see how far it gets him
Frankly it makes McCain sound like a wife beater or child molestor, "Look
what YOU made me do."
