Hi

My rewind starter rope got tangled inside the rewind rope/spring. I
dismantled the rewind rope/spring housing and the spring uncoiled. Firstly
I need help (step by step instructions) on reassembly and retensioning the
spring and pull rope. Secondly how many rotations to recoil the spring or
is it critical?

Thanks in anticipation.

For the older style rewinds.

First step, put the pulley in all by it self. Bend down the tabs that hold
the pulley.

Fish the end of the spring through the hole in the housing and hook it into
the pulley.

Wind the pulley, pulling the spring in as you go, be sure to turn it the
correct way. same rotation you would turn the pulley to start the
engine.wind it tight then back it off one turn. A square tube or stick that
fits the square in the pulley will help as a tool to turn the pulley.

Fish the rope through the hole in the shroud, into the hole in the pulley,
and knot it.

Release the pulley carefully and let it pull the rope back in, hopefully you
have a knot or handle on the other end so you don't lose it into the
housing!

Even the newer style rewinds I wind the spring till tight then back off on
turn. On the newer rewinds, put in the spring, wind it up, back it off one
turn, slip in the rope, you are done.
Either one put in all the rope it will hold with out binding on the housing,
or climbing over the pulley.
