I owned a '71 4001 that had 21 frets also. There seems to be a few of these
around.

All the best,
Bootsy
It shares some similarities with the 4002, but you're right, it's no 4002.
Maybe it's a custom built around an 'S' body with a neck originally destined
for a 4002. I don't think it's a prototype for the 4002 either, as mine is
a production unit from 1977. They were listed as a standard model in the
1975 Rickenbacker catalog, too, complete with a picture.
It does have a Switchcraft B3M XLR jack, 21 frets, Schaller M-4 tuners and
ebony fretboard like the 4002, but that's about it.

Let's be clear that this is NOT any kind of prototype, just a modified
instrument. It's also not the only 4001 with an ebony fingerboard, as a
number of such units were produced for special orders. (I still even have
some of those 4001 ebony fingerboard blanks in stock.)
The 4002 prototype still resides where it always has, at RIC headquarters.

Now THAT would a MOST excellent photo series--the RIC prototypes.
Then again, we'd have to wait how many years for that? ;)

So John...is that the one on page 211 of Smith's book? It's a B&W photo but it
appears to be an Autumnglo finish...is it??
