I just found out that a great sax player I used to work with committed
suicide. That's as much as anyone knows right now.

Thing is, he was a longtime Witness. Except for the magazines they leave at
my door, I don't know anything about their practices or customs, whether
non-believers are welcome at the service, or how suicide is treated.

I wouldn't ask this here, except that I don't know any other Witness
personally, and I remember a couple of guys here mentioning they are or were
Jehovah's. If you don't want to step up in here, you can email me privately.
I'd appreciate it, and so would the other players in town.

Thanks.

Sorry for the loss of a colleague and friend.

You can go to the service - sit in the back - wear a suit - raise and sit as
the rest of the congregation do and you will be fine. No one will be
offended.
They will know you are there to pay respect, but don't go up front unless
specifically asked.
Whatever you do - don't take the bread and wine which is the biggest no no
unless one is amongst the very few remaining chosen.

Suicide is fairly high up on the no no list, however this religion is based
on Christian values so human weakness is recognized.

I have been to a few funeral services in quite different religious settings
and the above works fine - just remember the saying "when in Rome".

Non-believers are welcome at services as long as they do not cause
disruptions. Suicide is considered sinful, but as all are imperfect,
is treated as other sins are. I offer my condolences. later, ron

Please accept my condolences on the death of your friend. It must be a big

Thanks to all who replied. Unfortunately it's a moot point.

Seems this guy took care of all the details long before the act. He pre-paid
all of his funeral expenses. No service at all.
