Can anyone recommend a Good utility for converting .jpg files to
the GIF format on the Mac?

Photoshop 2.5 for the Mac will open jpeg files and save as GIF.

$40 shareware isn't exactly cheap, either. Try JPEG Convert, which is
a well-done Mac port of the Independent JPEG Group's code. Will
convert JPEGs to and from GIF files, no QuickTime or shareware guilt
required.

If your JPEG files are in Macintosh JPEG format (that is, if JPEG
Convert won't read them), you can convert them to the standard "JFIF"
format using JPEGView 2.0, which is also freely available.

Both of the above-mentioned programs are very memory-friendly. If you
have large JPEGs and only 8MB or less, you might not be able to load
them with GIFConverter.
