AS if Sony hasn't suffered enough embarrassing news and set backs in the
recent months regarding the train-wreck that the PS3 is becoming (MASSIVE &
un-recoverable PS3 development problems, PS2 sales at a stand still, Root
kits, PSP being destroyed by the DS, etc.) ...now a Sony PS3 developer comes
out with the truth that many of us have feared, that the XBOX 360 really IS
superior to the PS3. What horrible news for Sony, can nothing go right for
the PS3?

It's bad enough the PS3 is utilizing a crippled system architecture and
hardware components that videogame developers world wide both despise and
mock. But do the developers themselves have to reveal that fact? Can't they
leave anything up to the imagination anymore? Sure the PS3 games won't live
up to hype, but we as Sony fans are used to being let down just a wee bit by
the playstation brand in general. I suppose it's official now, the PS3 is
doomed to fail but I will still get one anyway. Lets hope that in the next
generation, Sony wakes up, and creates a well designed PS4 that will
actually be able to compete with the successors to the Xbox 360 & Revo.

From a PS3 developer:

"I've spent some time the past year developing for the PS3. Actually it was
a cinematic demo to be shown at e3 in 2005 at a closed door viewing. I was
one of the few artists selected to work on it for the demo. My job was
primarily asset creation. I was creating assets to populate the path where
our camera would be flying during the demo. The company I work for is also
working on a launch title that I am quite familiar with. In short, I've
spent some time around the PS3 and or the teams developing for it.
I've really had to sit here and think for a long time about what my first
comment about the PS3 would be. Will I say, its GREAT or will I give it two
thumbs down. Well my immediate impression of the PS3 is.where is it?
Seriously, where is it? They have a case, a controller and a dev kit. But
the system still doesn't even exist. So what is there to say? We received
one of 5 PS3 dev kits in the United States some time ago. Several companies
in the US as well as companies over seas were given the daunting task of
creating a demo in less than 9 weeks on a first generation dev kit. Now I'll
be honest with you. What most companies do is fake the entire demo. I mean
they come up with some great visuals and neat tricks and scripted events. In
the end however, its not a real time demo and its not running ON the actual
box. We were the only company to my knowledge that showed something that ran
it live on the box. Even then it was a scripted event. You could not pause
the camera and fly around the scene. So if you saw the demo once, you saw it
again the exact same way the second time. Also this was on a brutally early
dev box. You could always tell where the PS3 dev box was because it's the
room that had the f-bomb coming out of it half the day.

Lots of time has passed since that demo and the dev box has gone from a
totally jimmy rigged computer and box of parts about the size of a small
child, to a much more realistic size. Although its still the size of a
normal pc. I have been pretty excited about the whole cell processing thing.
I am not a very technical person but my understanding of it was pretty
clear. (Multiple processors to handle individual events in parallel). Sounds
pretty good to me! To hear people talk, you'd thing that a processor
revolution was about to happen. So I've been pretty excited to say the
least. Now in my opinion it doesn't matter how good the PS3 is. If the XBOX
360 is better, then it doesn't really matter how the cell processors work or
how good they say it is. Realistically one of them will be better over all.
Now I've spoken with people who are on the technical side of the PS3. I've
also talked with people on the technical side of the XBOX 360. The
consistent comment I am hearing from people on my end is, "The XBOX 360 is
better". They are saying that it is capable of just doing more. (shrugs) Now
take that for what its worth. If you watch all the videos on the PS3 they
will say how much more powerful it is than the XBOX and vice versa. Im just
telling you what I am hearing. They proceeded to go into a lot of technical
info that I don't understand. So I just nod.

The game that we are creating for a launch title is a "just get it out"
title in my opinion. It doesn't look next generation. I don't see how anyone
could debate otherwise. It looks good. But it looks good for a game that has
come out in the last couple years or so. I mean we are talking about a box
that will be with us for the next 5+ years! In 5 years will the games we are
making today look good? The only way for that to be possible is if the new
games coming out for the PS3 are drastically improved. So good that they can
stand the test of time until the next system comes out. We've all seen Gears
of War for the xbox 360. If that even looks half as good when it comes out
then I'll be floored! The game we are making isn't even in the same league
as Gears of War. In fact there are many current games out that look just as
good and are using the exact same specs. So, on our end we are either not
pushing the bar or were just trying to "get a title out". To be fair, this
is a business. Sometimes you have to treat it as a business and not make the
best title you can. The best title you can make usually costs 20-40million
dollars/3 start overs and 4 years of your life. You just cant do that every
time out. Its impossible. Our game just keeps getting moved back..and
back...and back...and back. Again, where is the box? Where is the final
system? When is it coming out? No one knows and in the mean time people in
the industry are starting to get just a little salty. I mean I was at e3
2005 and PS3 was almost no where to be seen.

In closing, I started of VERY excited about the PS3. I was very confident
that it was going to just destroy the XBOX 360 just on the name SONY alone.
The more time that goes by the more I am becoming doubtful. Everything I've
developed or seen developed has yet to be "next gen". The poly counts are
not really any higher, im not seeing sub surface scattering, im not seeing
much HDR lighting. (or they are faking it and not really doing it), I'm not
seeing next gen fluid dynamics or object dynamics. I suspect that you'll be
able to have more dynamic objects in a scene than before. But im not seeing
games doing this yet. We dont have a controller, there is no network code
and there is no box. Its still the size of a normal PC. Oh well, at least
they have normal maps. Although I'm over the normal maps fad ok everyone!

I'm confident that the PS3 will have a few "crazy" games that show it off to
its potential. But I would expect the full capabilities of the box to not
show up until the system has been released PUBLICALLY for over a year. This
is the extra time the developers will need with a FINAL system to truly make
next gen games."

Well, DUH! I can't think of a single system in the entire history of
videogames that DIDN'T give us better games, demonstrating the full
capacity of the system, until a year or more after launch...except,
perhaps, the Atari Jaguar, where the games seemed equally poor each
year. It always takes time to come to terms with the hardware, and to
build on your first efforts.

HAHA!!! This one is already old news, in more ways than one, and has
been shot up to pieces a couple days ago.
It was picked up by Joystiq about 4 days ago and spread like wildfire
by xflop fanbitches. If you follow your own links, you will see they
all go back to Joystiq.
It turns out it was originally posted in a forum in November 2005, so
the comments about only "one of 5 devkits" could not have been
referring to the Reference Tool since that didn't start shipping until
December. That comment was referring to the original Alpha dev kits
which he clearly states "less than 9 weeks on a first generation dev
kit" in the next sentence.
Also, this jewel has been posted everywhere by xflop fanbitches as
Sony DEVELOPER. Again, this only shows the total ignorance of xflop
fanbitches. The guy was a contract worker, not a developer, a
non-technical 3D modeler, by his own admission, not a programmer.
Also, he admits only working on the content for a demo, not ever
having worked with the Alpha dev kit at all. The company that he USED
to work for was Sony. He makes several contradictory statements such as
"we were the only company that showed something live on the box". He
used to work for Sony and he makes that statement?
That statement totally ignores the Unreal Tournament 2007 and Fight
Night demos that were run in real time, although scripted. His
statement is "you could not pause the camera and fly around the scene"
but then he goes on later to say "I was at e3 2005 and PS3 was almost
no where to be seen". Hello, you just said you worked on the on stage
demo.
Then he goes on to say "I am hearing from people on my end is, 'The
XBOX 360 is better'." when the 'people on his end' were Sony employees.
Probably the most telling line is "Although I'm over the normal maps
fad ok everyone!". No self respecting 3D game artist would make a
statement like this. Half Life 2 is recognized as being one of the best
games ever visually and it uses normal maps extensively. In fact, it is
hard to point out any current game that is not using normal maps.
Now, this guy has come across as a loudmouth blowhard and has
admitted "wanting to make a name for himself". Apparently, he has and
will be free to do so on his own, now that he is no longer working
under NDA contract to Sony.

Never mind the fact that it wasnt even a developer's quote. It was some poor
game artist... the guy probably hated his job and wanted payback. And for
all its worth he sounded more like someone that was hired as a
vendor/contractor just to work on one simple demo.

how can you believe someone like that?

"not a developer, a non-technical 3D modeler"

You use the term "non-technical" very loosely, developer encompases:
programmers, 3d artists, level designers, graphic designers, game
designers, writers, sound guys, pm's, managers, etc. all of whom work
together as a team. they are all 'developers.' These are his words:
My responsibilities at Sony vary from month to month. I can be creating
organic character models one day and then texture painting, creating
special effects or lighting a scene the next day. I have a wide range
of talents and I have had my hand in almost every aspect of production.
My productivity is high and as a result I tend to get moved to teams
that need help. This has allowed me to spend a lot of time on multiple
projects within the company.

Playstation3 Engine Demo: (High quality cinematic to be viewed in HD at
Electronics Convention for SONY).
PSP: Untold Legends (Created 4 levels in an 8 week period to help team
make their projected ship date.)
PSP: Untold Legends 2: (Character Models from Concept).
PSP: Title to be announced (Lead Character Modeler/terrain generation
and texturing)
PC: Everquest 2 (Character Development Team)
PC: War Game (Lead Character Modeler)
PC: Planetside (lighting, character creation, Weapon creation,
environment modeling, texturing, FX)
NUFX (contract company creating games for EA Sports)
March Madness 2002: (my responsibilities were increased for this
product to include character work as well as the work I did on the
previous title. I relocated for my position at SONY however before I
could complete the bulk of production).
March Madness 2001: (I was responsible for creating all the stadiums,
environments and background characters from start to finish)
NBA Street: (environment modeling)

was not refering to every game developer on earth. I have no idea what
the state of Mobile Suit Gundam and Heavenly Sword were during e3 of
last year but they were not at the demo. I would be pretty suprised
however if they had much more than an emulation running on a normal pc.
Which is certainly possible. here is a link to the demo we did at e3
last year. this video is about 2 hours long fyi.

I think PS3 might be a disaster for Sony. even if it outsells Xbox
360. PS3 is so brute force, so complex, that it is going to break
Sony. even IF Sony manages to get it out in 2006 in good working order
with games. I fear that PS4 will have to go in another direction,
like Nintendo is doing now with Revolution. the PS4 cannot just be
another PlayStation like PS2 or PS3 just even more complex and
powerful. PS4 is going to have to be designed smarter. Sony should
learn from what Microsoft has done with the 360.

PS2 cost Sony alot. the only reason PS2 did not kill Sony is because
it so massively outsold the combined competition, 2 to 1
(Dreamcast: 10M - Gamecube: 20M Xbox: 20M vs PS2: 100M)

A couple of days ago, we brought word of a Sony employee that had been
brutally honest about the PS3's current state. He posted a lengthy
review of the PS3 console on Down in Front. The review it seems has
been removed from that site with the following note:

Sorry chiclitl - I had to remove your last post.

We removed the post for a reason. I can't go into it any more
until I talk with the other members of DIF. When we clear things up,
we'll post it again. =)

Thanks - And welcome to Down in Front!

Thank godness for those wizards at Google. The cache is still lurking

This is just pathetic. We already know the Xbox 360 kicks much ass. I'm having
one of those JoJo sneaky suspicions that the PS3 will kick much ass too. I get
a kick out of people who need one system to fail so that they can feel
everything is right in the universe. I have no problem getting into
discussions with people about which system will sell more but you turds who
feel a system needs to fail are not being true gamers and not understanding

The Sony Playstation 3 has no chance of failing. Just on the brand name
alone, people will buy the machine even if one blows up and kills
somebody. The only question is how much of its hold on the marketplace
will Sony lose this generation. PS3 fanboys like Blig Merk like to
think that Sony will dominate forever - while it's very possible that
Sony will still hold a bigger slice of the video game market this
generation, the days of 80% market share are long gone due to the
incredible hype surrounding the XBOX 360, the incredible hype
surrounding the shortage of said system and the incredible work
Microsoft has done on the system.

As a usability specialist, I'm appalled at some of the flaws in the
interface for many of Microsoft products, especially its flagship
Office suite (although what I've seen of the next version of both
Windows and Office shows an impressive improvement in usability).
However, Microsoft really did their homework with the XBOX 360
interface and the XBOX Live experience. It's bar-none the best user
interface ever created for a video game system (not that there have
been very many system user interfaces) and Sony would be hard-pressed
to have a dashboard even remotely as well-designed (and considering
Sony's reputation of style over substance in most of their products,
I'm not confident Sony has one iota of a chance here).

While the XBOX 360 launch titles were generally less-than-stellar, the
best games are still yet to come - and there hasn't yet been a launch
title for any video game system that truly showcased all the
capabilities of the system (Mario 64 was a good game from a gameplay
perspective but there were much technically better games on the N64
later on in the system's life). It will be the same with the PS3 -
there will likely be a must-have launch title (as opposed to the last
time Sony launched a console) but the chances of that launch title
being a true showcase of the system's capabilities is next to zero.

I'm truly excited for this generation of video gaming. I still don't
have a Playstation 2 (and likely never will since the Playstation 3 is
backwards-compatible) mainly because I'm not a fan of very many games
on the system. However, I am most certainly going to own all three
video game systems (and am still hoping, admittedly futilely, that Sega
will get back in the hardware market) of this generation and be a very
happy video game camper.

Most estimates say that MS will have a slight lead over Sony. Sony will
lose some marketshare, particularly in North America/Europe. Sony will
probably still be around, though, and still a very competitive console.

The main problem with Sony seems that they are headed towards the
Sega/Nintendo route- treating third parties badly, saving the "good stuff",
the good developement tools and support, for themselves. Publishers and
developers are going to get tired of that attitude of having to jump through
hoops. It's arrogant and stupid on Sony's part. If they had only followed
the model of the original Playstation and kept the design of the hardware as
simple and straightforward as possible, it wouldn't be an issue at all.

You talk about these like they were good things. The xflop
three-shitty totally depended on absolutely astounding sales during the
holiday season to get an overwhelming install base in. THAT DID NOT
HAPPEN. In fact, the actual sales numbers are pretty mediocre. xflop
fanbitches keep throwing around 1.5 million sold so far like that was
something great, but that is now going on 2 months of sales, with the
peak selling period now long over, and that is a world wide launch
number. This breaks down to about 800,000 in North America, 500,000 in
all of Europe and less than 100,000 in Japan. This is not a big install
base. Everybody that was going to buy one basically did. There are a
few new sales but they are in small proportions now. Micro$haft has
clearly stated their stake is in the Core and that is about all they
are shipping now. And those are starting to stack up all over the
place. You are really hallucinating if you think this is a good
situation. Add to that there has been no new game since the end of the
holiday season, no compelling reason for new buys, there are virtually
no new games in February and there have now been announcements for
another half dozen being delayed even longer.
The really big problem for the xflop three-shitty is the defects. 1%
to 3% bullshit!!! More like 5% to 10% and that seems to be growing by
the day. The initial 90-day warranty period isn't even up yet. There
are multiple people reporting multiple returns now, sending in a
defective unit and getting a defective unit back. There are fundamental
design problems with the xflop three-shitty.
xflop fanbitches really need to realize that the xflop three-shitty
needed a huge, overwhelming install base to have a snowball's chance in
hell of gaining significant market share. THAT DID NOT HAPPEN AND IS
NOT GOING TO HAPPEN NOW. It really is downhill from here for the xflop
three-shitty.

You keep stating that it depended on stellar sales over the holiday
period, yet there is no foundation to this.

The only thing they need is to get lots of mindhare, early.

Getting consoles out there, on the shelves, and ultimately into homes
not only gives people a solid product to focus on, but also builds word
of mouth.

If I'm playing PGR3, and my friends come round to see it, they will
likely want to play it and discover they would like a 360 also.

Therefore more consoles have sales.

This is false, - the XBOX 360 has been on sale in only 1 territory for
about 1 month and two weeks - whereas Europe has had it just under 1
month and 1 week. Japan hasnt had it even a month yet.

Oh yes it is, for a little over a months worth of sales, it is huge.
It's not as big as it could have been either, as people are still on
waiting lists for them.

> Everybody that was going to buy one basically did

So you claim, but you have no evidence to back this up.

I counter that the early adopters are still trying to get ahold of
them, and it is these that cede the desire in others to buy one later
on.

. There are a

Naturally they are lower, but you have not provided sales statistics
to prove this. THis is merely your assumption and based purely on your
hopes that the 360 is no longer popular after Christmas.

Nonsense. These are selling, people are buying them - they are selling
out.

Provide me with proof that they are 'stacking up' everywhere.

Dead or Alive 4 launched just after christmas and is getting very
respectable reviews
Full Auto is due out very shortly.
Oblivion, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare to name but two for march.

Actually, the number of complaints online has declined significantly.
Where there is no smoke, there is no fire. Initial claims that there
was a significant number of defects are false, and it can be attributed
to Blog noise, essentially reposting the same information over and over
thus appearing to be separate stories.

Significantly, very few posts here have been made from users
experiencing problems.

Once again, you fail to provide proof of this. Yes, no doubt there are
a tiny minority of people who do have such issues - heck, every popular

their desired bit of hardware. It's the nature of the medium, - if you
have a problem, you tell everyone. if it doesn't have a problem nobody
hears about your good fortune.

It has at least until July in japan, and the rest of the year in the
US, and possibly well into next year to build up marketshare before the
PS3 launches.

Also you assume that the PS3 will take sales from the 360. This will
only happen if:

1. The PS3 launches flawlessly with a handful of stunning must have
games on day 1.
2. The 360 fails to get any titles that are any good between now and
the middle of next year.

1 is unknown at the moment, but most agree that its unlikely to be a
flawless launch (what console ever is?).
2 is simply not going to happen. Most people here can list at least
half a dozen games that will be system sellers, or potential ones at
least.

Gears of war, for a start, will shift XBOX 360s - and we have yet to
see what Halo 3 is going to do.

The only reason one can come to this conclusion is to ignore all the
great games on the system that are either out or coming out, and assume
the PS3 will have all the cards.

Xbox was pretty much maxed out at launch.
DOA3 pretty much showed off how powerful the Xbox was at launch.
DOAU looks better, but not by a tremendous amount.
I'd say, at launch, the xbox ws already pushing 3/4 of its power.

Gamecube also did a pretty good job with Rogue Leader, and that was
pushing about 70% of its power

PS2 atleast did a good job of showing off what it was capable of with
MGS2. Although, that game only pushed about 1/4 of the systems power.

All credibility lost.

PCVSConsole has got to be the biggest mis-informational gaming site in
the world. You would have had more credibility if you posted a link
from Gamefaqs forums than pcvsconsole.

Exactly how the PS2 was designed.
It was a brute force machine in terms of pushing polygons and pixel
bandwidth. It was hell in the beginning, but after God of War the
graphics have been on par with Xbox and GC.

Since the OP sent this to both the XBox and the Playstation newsgroups,
it's probably safe to call them a troll, which are idiots by default.
Please don't feed them.

God of War and Burnouts are pretty much the only PS2 games that compare
to the better looking Xbox ones. And on a big screen, even God of War
is pretty pixelated and poorly textures (as are, I hate to say it, Ico
and Shadow of the Colossus).

Xbox360 has failed, stupendously.
