There was a 1990 sci-fi movie, 'Hardware', which turned out to have
been ripped off completely from a short story in the British comic
'2000AD'. They ended up taking the director to court and winning,
amending prints of the film to give the comic credit at the end.

Of course, it's perfectly possible for a film to be a rip-off -- The
Terminator (Harlan Ellison), A Fistful of Dollars (the samurai movie
Yojimbo) -- and still be great.
